Cabo da Roca. The very edge of Europe

The edge of Portugal

Cape Roca - the westernmost cape of the Eurasian continent, is in the territory of Portugal. The Romans called it Promontorium Magnum, in the era of the Great Geographical Discoveries was called the cape of Lisbon.

From Sintra we reached the shore of the ocean in just 20 minutes. Surprisingly, we were not just ashore. We were at the westernmost point of Europe. Cape Rock. Or, in Portuguese, Cabo da Roca. It seems that it sounds like "kaboo da rock".

Once on the beach I saw a commemorative sign with coordinates and the inscription "Cabo da Roca". He stood almost at the very edge of the rocks and further extended the ocean. The shore here is steep and high. The height of the rocks is 140 meters, and the rocks are practically vertical.

You look behind the wooden railing, which encircle the edge of the earth and look into the bessin. Fearfully! Below, the waves are beating against the rocks. There is a sense of flight! I am blowing a strong, strong wind that smells of salt. The sun is hot.

Next to the sign with the coordinates of the cape is also a lighthouse. There is nothing more on the shore. Solid rocks. Above the cliffs are covered with some shrubby shrubbery with red berries.

A little farther from the edge of the rocks, closer to the road there is a post office, a restaurant and a souvenir shop, where certificates of visiting Cabo da Roca are sold. I, somehow saw someone at a party such a certificate in a frame on the wall. There is something in the area of 5 euros. It seems that not a lot, but at that time every Euro cents was in our account. We decided that there would be enough photos.

And there seems to be nothing like this in this place. Just shore, just the ocean! The Atlantic! But, nevertheless, there is something that creates an emotional background and you shiver with this spectacle! And if you are lucky and there will be no people (tourists) who flies like flies everywhere, not allowing you to quietly take pictures or just stand up ... enjoy the noise of the sea and loneliness.

Cape Rock has a touching side. Brainless tourists climb to the very edge that would be photographed. There was a case that tourists from Poland fell from the 140-meter height and died. Therefore, be attentive.

But I, all the same, recommend that everyone, in necessarily order, visit Cabo da Roca.

After looking at the ocean, as Christopher Columbus probably could have done, we went back to Lisbon along the coast. 140 meter cliffs began to decrease and soon it became possible to descend to the water. This place was chosen by fishermen.

I jumped on the sharp volcanic rocks, eaten by the sea and the wind, and I could touch the water. The rocks looked menacing. Sharp, dangerous. The wave hit them hard. Spray flew in the face. I thought how different and interesting this world is.

And in conclusion, I want to note that we got to Cape Roca only because the night route brought us to Sintra.
