The legend of the three sisters of Katoomba

This unusual rock formation sits at a place called Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, a couple of hours from Sydney, Australia. At different times of the day the light brings out the various colours of the formation making it worthy of a visit over the course of the day and in different seasons as the colour change is very beautiful. For those looking for spectacular photos they are also floodlit until around 11pm. The floodlit formation against the darkening background is amazing.

The local Aboriginal's have a legend revolving around the rock formation; Apparently the Jamison Valley was home to three sisters, Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo who were members of the Katoomba tribe. The fell in love with three brothers from another tribe called the Nepean tribe however due to tribal law constraints they were forbidden to marry. The three brothers were unhappy with the law and decided to capture the three sisters by force which caused a battle between the two tribes. During the battle the witchdoctor of the Katoomba tribe realised the three sisters were in danger and thought to protect them by turning them to stone. A questionable act I have to say. Anyway, during the battle the witchdoctor was killed and because only he could reverse the spell the three sisters remain in their rock forms forever more.

These day's the area is a thriving tourist area with walkers able to descend to the three sisters formation for a closer look. I'm not convinced with the local legend of their creation however it is certainly a spectacular place to visit. My suggestion is to take a weekend trip from Sydney, stay locally and really explore the area. There are some lovely B&B's in the area and plenty of good options for lunch and dinner with many great restaurants and cafe's in the immediate area.
