House Hunting / Buscando Casa
Today is day 72 of the road trip that never ends. Or at least it feels that way sometimes. But I think I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. We believe we have picked out the town we would like to rent in. It is called Tequisquiapan and it is one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, or Magic Towns. They are officially recognized places with something extra attractive to offer. (Real de Catorce from my Christmas post was also a Magic Town.) Tequisquiapan is along a route with good art, wine, and cheese. It also has a nice little lake and a clean downtown with old European style buildings and a small river. I have started scoping out restaurants that I like, including this fancy place with plates decorating the wall. It is in the state of Queretaro, which is generally prosperous and safe.
We are about an hour from a big city of about a million people which is also called Queretaro. Querétaro City reminds me of the city I grew up in because it has so many trees and has a nice mix of modern and older style. My husband and I stayed in Queretaro for New Years weekend. We got a hotel room right in front of the central plaza. 2 year old Grant and I went for a “little walk” down a brick road to another plaza down the way. Grant enjoyed splashing in puddles from cleaning the street and we stopped to buy a day of the dead style magnet for him. When we went to a restaurant for lunch he made a friend his age called Diego and I had a nice chat with Diego’s mom about how they are moving from Mexico City. New Years Eve was a big loud party with little tents lining the street selling hot food. We also went back to Querétaro about a week later with Gavin’s family to visit a pyramid from 300BC and the aqueduct made in the 1700s.
Tequisquiapan is also about 15 minutes from a small city called San Juan which has a Walmart, McDonald’s, and Little Caesar’s, so I can find a taste of the US there. Grant really likes going to Walmart and riding in the cart. He also got excited when we bought toy story diapers there with “Haddy Boot,” which is what he calls Woody. He likes the play place at McDonald’s, and he got his first ever happy meal. Ros, 4 months old, sat in a high chair for the first time.
This week, since we have picked a town, we have visited houses available for rent. It has been a busy week, and one of the hard parts for me has been setting up the appointments. Talking on the phone in a foreign language is surprisingly challenging. Finding a place suitable for Gavin has been harder than a place for us because he needs to have space to park his RV. Many of the places in town have small or non-existent yards or are fenced in. Outside of town there are some things for sale, but nothing for rent within our price range. This last week we thought we had found a good one, but when we were working on paperwork, something came up and the owner seemed really inflexible like maybe someone we wouldn’t want to work with.
We might still be able to work something out soon though, because while the guys were commiserating about that not working out, someone passed by and said he had a friend with a house for rent. They went over to check it out, and it is an amazing huge beautiful house. It has really good work space for Gavin and Nathan. It is outside of the price range we were looking for, but when they told the owners Gavin couldn’t afford it, they dropped their price by 20%. It is still only street parking for the RV, but it is a wide quiet street, so it should be functional. They have decided they want to rent it, so we start the paperwork again.
Nathan and I like several different places, mostly in Tequisquipan, though we also like one in San Juan. The one we are most interested in right now is in Tequisquiapan and has 4 bedrooms including 1 with a loft, so we can have lots of company. It also has a nice large yard for the kids to play in, plus a park just outside the gate. The house is white and the back is covered in vines. It is in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood that would be good for going on walks with the boys. We would be about a mile from the house Gavin is working on. Plus, it would be nice to finally have a house to live in.
The hotel we are staying in right now only costs the equivalent of $16 US per night, which has allowed us to stay here for a couple of weeks, instead of just a day or two to get a break from the RV. Not having to pack up all the time has helped a lot with travel fatigue. Hopefully we will just have to wait a little longer before getting a house and starting the next stage of this adventure.
Hoy es día 72 del viaje que nunca termina. Así siento a veces. Pero creo que puedo ver un fin. Hemos elegido el pueblo en que nos gustaría rentar. Se llama Tequisquiapan y es uno de Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos. Son lugares especiales que la gobierna reconocen. (Real de Catorce en mi artículo de Navidad fue un Pueblo Mágico.) Tequisquiapan es en una ruta de arte, vino, y queso. También tiene un lago, un río pequeño, y un centro limpio con edificios de estilo europeo. He encontrado algunos restaurantes que me gustan, incluyendo este lugar con platos en la pared. Somos en un estado se llama Querétaro, que en general es próspero y seguro.
Somos aproximadamente una hora de una ciudad grande de un millón de personas se llama Querétaro. Ciudad Querétaro me recuerda de Spokane, Washington en los Estados Unidos, donde yo era niña, porque tiene muchos árboles y una mezcla de lugares nuevos y viejos. Mi esposo y yo quedamos en Queretaro durante la fiesta de Nuevo Año. Dormimos en un hotel al lado de la plaza central. Grant quien tiene 2 años y yo caminamos por un camino de ladrillo a otra plaza. A Grant fascina saltar en charcos en la calle y le compramos un imán. Mientras comimos almuerza en una restaurante, hizo un amigo de su edad se llama Diego. Yo hablé con su madre. Están mudando desde Ciudad Mexico hasta Ciudad Querétaro. La fiesta de Nuevo Año era grande y ruidoso con mucha gente vendiendo comida en las calles. Ademas, regresamos a Querétaro una semana después con la familia de Gavin para visitar una pirámide del año 300 A.C. y un acueducto que construyeron en un año entre 1700 y 1800.
Además, Tequisquiapan es aproximadamente 15 minutos de un ciudad pequeño se llama San Juan. Tiene Walmart, McDonald’s, y Little Caesar’s. Me gusta tener un poco de los Estados Unidos. A Grant le gusta ir a Walmart y montar la compra. También sentía emocionante cuando compramos pañales de Toy Story con “Haddy Boot,” que es su nombre para Woody. Le fascina jugar en el campo de juegos en McDonald’s, y obtenía su primer cajita feliz. Ros, que tiene 4 meses, se sentó en silla alta para la primera vez.
Esta semana, ya que hemos elegido un pueblo, visitamos casas disponibles por renta. Fue una semana muy ocupada, y para mi era difícil hacer las citas. Hablar por teléfono en español es bien difícil. Es difícil encontrar una casa buena para Gavin, porque necesita un lugar para estacionar su vehículo recreational. Muchos lugares en el pueblo tienen pequeños jardines, son sin jardines, o tienen cercas. Afuera del pueblo hay casa en venta, pero nada en renta. Esta última semana, pensamos que habíamos encontrado algo bueno para Gavin, pero mientras hicimos las papeles, encontramos que el dueño era muy duro, y no queremos trabajar con él.
Pero todavía tenemos esperanza, porque mientras los hombres estaban hablando de como eso fue triste, alguien que estaba pasando caminando les dijo que tenía un amigo con casa en renta. Fueron a ver lo, y es una casa muy grande y muy bonita. Tiene bueno espacio para el trabajo de Gavin y Nathan. Costaba más que podemos pagar, pero cuando les explico a los dueños, ellos bajaban el precio 20%. El estacionamiento es en la calle, pero la calle es tranquilo y amplio, entonces debe funcionar. Han decidió que quieren rentar la, entonces empezamos los papeles otra vez.
A Nathan y yo nos gusta algunos lugares, por la mayor parte en Tequisquiapan, aunque hay uno en San Juan. Nuestra favorita está en Tequisquiapan y tiene 4 recamaras incluyendo una con un loft, entonces hay mucho espacio para huéspedes. Tiene un jardín grande para los niños y hay un parque a un lado. Es una casa blanca cubierta en vides. Está en un barrio hermoso y tranquilo que debe ser muy bien para caminar con los niños. Estaríamos ubicado un mile de la casa que Gavin quiere. Hay de más, sería muy lindo vivir en una casa otra vez.
Ahora estamos pagando solo 16 US dólares cada noche para un cuarto en hotel. Eso nos ayuda quedar en hotel algunas semanas en vez de quedar solo una o dos días para tener un poco espacio. Quedar en un lugar me ayuda a no estar tan cansada con el viaje. Ojalá que pronto tengamos una casa rentada para que podamos empezar la siguiente parte de esta adventure.
