Last week I came to visit the castle Greifenstein in Hesse for the first time. Unfortunately, everything was closed and only one round. But that does not matter, have to come again and try to catch a day with good weather, which is rare in the Westerwald.

vorige Woche bin ich dazu gekommen das erste mal die Burg Greifenstein in Hessen zu besichtigen. Leider war alles zu und konnte nur eine Runde drehen. Aber das macht nichts, muss dafür noch einmal kommen und versuchen mal ein Tag mit gutem Wetter zu erwischen, was eher selten ist im Westerwald

CastkeGreifenstein is under reconstruction because it was abandoned in 1693 by its owners. In 1969, it was donated to an organization to maintain it. From 1995, the Federal Republic is also involved in the restoration.
The castle is almost 1000 years old. It was first mentioned in 1160, so it must be older than 1160.

Burg Greifenstein ist im Wiederaufbau weil es wurde 1693 verlassen von seine Eigentümer. 1969 wurde es an einer Organisation gespendet um es zu erhalten. Ab 1995 ist auch die Bundesrepublik involviert in der Restaurierung.
Die Burg ist fast 1000 Jahre alt. Das erste mal wurde es im Jahr 1160 erwähnt, also muss es älter sein als 1160.

The view from the castle is wonderful. You can see the castle from the highway very well, but the view from the castle to the highway is much better.

Das Ausblick von der Burg ist wunderbar. Man sieht die Burg von der Autobahn sehr gut, aber die Aussicht von der Burg auf die Autobahn finde ich deutlich besser.
Es ist eins der höchsten gelegenen Gebäuden im Lahn-Dill Kreis, und das kann man sehr gut hier sehen.

You can see that the old buildings have been incorporated by nature. The stones are covered by moss.
In the picture below you can see a big bell. The castle houses a collection of bells, where bells used to be cast.
Next time I'm there, I'll try to see the castle inside.

Man kann sehen das die alten Gebäude von der Natur eingegliedert worden sind. Die Steine sind von Moos bedeckt.
Im unteren Bild kann man eine große Glocke sehen. Die Burg beherbergt eine Glocken Sammlung, Hier hat man früher Glocken gegossen.
Wenn ich nächste mal da bin, werde ich versuchen die Burg auch von innen zu sehen.

This castle is so different compared to red castles in Lithuania. Like this Trakai Island Castle. :)

I've always been so obsessed with castles, shame that it was closed! Really enjoyed reading your post, my German is super rusty, but having it right next to the English like that makes it much easier to read and digest :)

I looove castles :) One of my fondest memories as a very young "lad" growing up in England in the late eighties--climbing around in old "abandoned" castles/ stone structures, often-times just out in the middle of nowhere type wooded locations where we would walk around and play.
One popular activity was to take sleds or pieces of cardboard and slide down the dried-up moats which surrounded the castles. This was fun. Kind of weird, and creepy now that I think back on it--those "moats" were usually pretty freakin gross--often just a stagnant pool of the castle's refuse; yelch!
