Travelogue : A week in Tokyo - 25steemCreated with Sketch.

I have just returned from Cappadocia in Turkey and before starting a new series of articles on this beautiful and full of light I wanted to finish with this photo taken in the middle of the set of Tokyo offices.

On each trip I realize how lucky I am. The chance to be who I am, to live where I live, to have the purchasing power of median French, to have a Schengen passport, to be a Westerner clearly identify as such wherever I go. I often thought about this by talking with locals where I have the opportunity to meet during my travels. Whether it's the taxi driver, my neighbor on a public transit, the night watchman of my hotel, the waiter of a restaurant or the barman of any bistro. All of them envy me the chance to discover the world, to have the money to come to their homes, to simply have a vacation, to be released in my country and in their country from any religious constraint and (to some extent social), to come from a democratic country, from a state of law, from a protective state. When everyone is working, I have the opportunity to come and idle among the busy employees of the Tokyo business centers. When everyone needs to pray towards Mecca, I have the opportunity to continue my activities. When drinking alcohol is forbidden for the local, I am offered wherever I go. When getting a visa for Europe costs a fortune and is often refused, I am offered mine when I arrive in the country. When everyone has to queue up for airport immigration, there is a fast, automated queue for biometric European passports. In their place I will be hateful, jealous, at least envious, yet I have never read these feelings in the eyes of all these people crossed during my travels.

I have great respect for all those hard-working people who are often keen on the well-being of their family before themselves, aware of the common good that surrounds them, often very proud of their country, which does not necessarily make it theirs. When I come back to France, in my city of Strasbourg, I am surprised and disgusted by people's behavior, incivility, degradation, bad reception in shops, closed or aggressive faces, stigmata of depression on faces, not knowing how to live together that characterizes us. I have to relearn how to stop smiling at everyone, not to talk to anyone anymore, in short, to fall back into this greyness that is not necessary while waiting for my next trip...

It takes a lot to realize how privileged we are sometimes. Recognizing that is important because so many don’t and it looks bad.

I am sorry am too late to upvote some of your posts.
Very well documented and written series.

A special light shines on post 21 because that is how exactly I see Japan.

Japan is a land of contrast where firmly rooted traditions stand side by side with unshakable confidence in modernity.

Merci

Thanks you for your nice comment :)

You're welcome. :)

You know, I could agree more. I feel the same about my native country. I always describe it with exactly the same words:(
To finish this positively, would you mind sharing your passport? 😜 All these visa rules sometimes makes me crazy:)
