Trolltunga Part 1: HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK | Adventure Every Day Episode 3

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

It was a Thursday night in mid-September, and I got a message with an attachment from my friend Justin. It was a guide to hiking Trolltunga, the place we were going to try to reach on the weekend.

I was already slightly uneasy about the trip because I was basically leading our 3-person group and making the logistical arrangements including transportation, accommodation, and gear. I had never been to Trolltunga but know very well that when you are going outdoors in Norway, especially in the mountains, you have to be prepared for anything, especially when it comes to weather. Rain, snow, cold, wind - standard fare in the mountains even if it might technically still be "summer".

But the attachment I received caused more reason for concern as it stated that you should only hike with a guide between September 15th and October 15th. Great, I thought. While this could possibly make it more of an epic journey, it could also make it a really bad idea to try.

But we were going to try nonetheless. So I went out and bought a cook stove, packed as well as I could, and hoped for the best. I figured worst case, we could bail on the hike and just enjoy the cabin we were renting out.

Luckily for us, the weather cooperated. Sort of anyways. It was still quite cold and windy, but we were far from the only successful tourists to step foot on the tongue that day. And we even made a new friend on the way and got some pretty great footage of the whole excursion, which is now Episode 3 of our Adventure Every Day web series:

This wasn't the last Trolltunga hike of the year, however, which is why this is Part 1. Part 2 involved a return trip that was almost in the Stop! Danger of Death season, and we found out why! That will be Episode 4, coming out next weekend. Stay tuned!
