Life in Oslo Part 6: Dodging Dogsleds and Building a Fire at -15C

in #travel7 years ago

This is my second post this week aimed at raising awareness and supporting an awesome project my friend is working on called Taqanu, which aims to provide blockchain-based banking access to refugees and everyone who might be excluded by the modern financial system. To learn about the project, please click here to see my previous post.

Our adventure begins here on a frozen lake. Balázs the Taqanu guy, myself, and our outdoor-minded comrade Oliver realized the ice maybe wasn't quite as thick as we thought at first, so we quickly retreated.

Around the next bend, we were nearly run over by a pack of sled dogs in training. There were at least a dozen dogs tugging the driver on skis through poorly-established woodland trails. How he managed to keep these dogs under control is a mystery to me. One false step could've sent him face first into a tree. But it was a cool and unexpected sight to see! (Skip to the 2:53 mark in the video below to check that out).

Trudging on snow shoes through the knee deep snow, we were determined to reach a scenic point where we could attempt to build a fire for cooking our salmon. This meant some climbing first. We hacked down some hiking stick-sized limbs to help us navigate through the snowy path. Now looking like a rag-tag bunch ascending the Misty Mountains, we made our way.

At the top, a perfect opportunity for firewood presented itself - a downed tree about the right size to chop up with the hatchet. This was our first chance to try out our now-patented technique of extracting dry wood from the middle of a tree by cutting it into short logs and then splitting them (this technique has been used extensively in some of my other videos).

At last, we got the fire cooking just hot enough to warm us up and smoke our salmon to perfection. Did I mention it was -15 degrees! The fire and warm meal was much needed to continue the journey. And good thing too, because we had only one hour to make it back to the train station. Missing the train would mean waiting 2 more hours in the cold for the next one.

We arrived just in time, another great adventure in the books! Here's the film:
