This portable air canister lets you breathe underwater for 10 minutes

The Scorkl looks to be an ideal companion for your next beach holiday.

A portable air canister known as Scorkl, has been created that allows users to breathe underwater for 10 minutes. The Australian brand behind it has been crowdfunding for its launch since the start of June and has already achieved well over its target, raising over AU$ 720,000 (£428,000).

Scorkl

The Scorkl has been designed to give users total freedom when they are swimming and diving underwater. Unlike a traditional snorkel which confines you to the surface or a heavy scuba tank for use at greater depth, the Scorkl is a go between portable air tank that gives users greater flexibility in the water. The ideal companion for exploring reefs and for seeing marine life at a closer range.

Take a look at the Scorkl in action:

Using the device

The Scorkl can be filled either directly from a scuba tank or from our high-pressure hand pump and is suitable for both novices and scuba trained users. However, it does come with a warning. Novices are advised not to use the Scorkl at depths below three metres, or more than five times in one day. That’s due to the risks associated with deep sea diving which includes decompression sickness and pulmonary damage.

From initial impressions, the Scorkl looks to be a hit. It fulfils a market need by connecting the dots between snorkelling and diving. It could also work as a way to introduce more people into diving by giving them a taster of the sport.

It’s early backers are set to receive the Scorkl by October 2017 and while no other details have been released about the timeline for its launch into the market, we’re guessing at a late 2017/ early 2018 launch.
