Caminito del Rey - El Chorro, Spain

Caminito del Rey, once marked as one of the World’s Most Dangerous Walkway was closed for restoration due to increase in the number of casualties and deaths. It was then restored and reopened to common public in 2015.

The original way was built to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls with a means to cross between them, to provide for transport of materials, and to help facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel.

How to reach Caminito del Rey:

You can reach El-Chorro by train from any part of Spain, we started our journey from Malaga. Public transport in spain is quite good and reliable. El Chorro is a small station and just outside the station, you get the buses which will take you the starting point of the Caminito del Rey walkway.

In case you didn't buy tickets online, there is still a chance to get the tickets on the north gate from where the walk starts. On weekends, the place is very crowded but on weekdays, there is a fair chance of getting the ticket at the gate. If you are travelling to spain for a long vacation, obviously you will have your luggage along and you can't take big bags along with you on the walk. But don't worry about it, there is a road going down to the parking area from the railway station, you will find an inquiry office for Caminito del Rey, where you can keep your luggage and also ask if the tickets are available.

We took the bus from the station to the base for Caminito del Rey and the charges are very nominal. Bus drops you at the base point from where you have to walk almost 2.7 kms for the North gate of Caminito del Rey. On the way to North Gate, you will be in a very serene atmosphere, luckily when we went for the walk, it wasn't that hot.

Don't forget to carry some snacks and water to keep you energised and hydrated as you don't have any option to buy anything until the end of the walkway.

At the end of the walk, you have some options to get yourself a little snacks treat and some good natural drinks to hydrate yourself, there was a local who was selling free made juice with ice (Lime and mint, watermelon and melon). After the walk, we were really exhausted and had a lot of free time before catching our train to Seville. There is a small cafe on the railway station itself, which serves nice beer and awesome food (both quality and quantity). There is a big restaurant on the other side of the road but we didn't prefer to eat there as in the morning they neither allow us to keep our luggage in the restaurant nor did they guide us though there is an official information center where we kept our luggage. Though we faced some language problem but people are very helpful and down to earth.
