Travel: A long day out in Lisbon, Portugal

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

We recently had the opportunity to visit Portugal's capital city, Lisbon. Here are a collection of photos and a touch of history from this ancient and very vibrant city.

Located in western Portugal, Lisbon is the country's largest city and serves a commercial, political, and tourism hub. It is also the westernmost capital city in continental Europe, surrounding the estuary of the Tagus River which provides drinking water and power to most of central Spain, and Portugal before draining into the Atlantic. source

Getting around

The streets of Lisbon are rarely straight and uniform, and you need to be a keen walker to travel on foot. However, there are other options, including the old tram, and the electric powered Tuk-tuk. Both of these methods look out-dated, but clearly serve a purpose and are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

You wait 2 hours, and then 3 turn up at once...

Ceramics and Clay

As well as providing drinking water and power to the the city, the Tagus supply's an abundance of clay. For this reason, Lisbon is the center for Portuguese pottery and this becomes clear when walking around the city. Many homes and buildings have red, clay roofs, and are decorated with charming ceramic tiles or 'Azulejos'. A selection of which you can see below.

Tiles... tiled.

Pastéis de Nata

Any travel blog to Lisbon would be incomplete without a short section on the famous Pastéis de Nata, or egg tart - like your grandma used to make, or mine did at least.

Shweeeeet!

Dating back to the 16th century source and originally produced by sweet-toothed nuns, any time of day is a good time for a tart in Lisbon...

Graffiti

Walking around the city, it becomes quite clear that there is not enough paper to go round. The skilled artists of the day have had to resort to the walls and other flat surfaces in order to display their talents. Here are some of my favorites:

Walls are bad m'kay

This Saturday afternoon spent strolling around the city, we enjoyed some rain showers but plenty of warm sunshine. Amongst the cobbled streets, graffiti, and variety of transport methods, there is plenty of green to provide some balance.

And finally, what travel blog is complete without a photo of you on Location?
