My Taiwan Trip (3) – Dadaocheng, the most developed district of Taipei 100 years ago

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

The second day of my Taipei’s trip, I visited Dadaocheng.

If you had visited Taipei, you may know famous spots like Ximending, Xinyi District, Taipei 101 or Jiufen, Shifen. And you may free strange about Dadaocheng. I know the place just because my hotel was next to it. Dadaocheng is at the west of Taipei city center, beside Tamsui River. It’s believed the best conserved old town district of Taipei.

Let’s talk about the history of Dadoucheng. In the ancient time, the development of the Taipei area was based on the Tamsui River. Tamsui River is the third longest river of Taiwan, as well as the most important river of the north Taiwan. In the mid 19thcentury, because of the attack of British and French union, Tamsui River was opened for trading. The development of Tamsui River became more rapid. Later, due to the river blockage by pollution, the economic center of Tamsiu River kept moving and came to Dadaocheng at the late 19thcentury.

Dadaocheng was the most important development center of Taipei from the late 19thcentury to early 20thcentury, thanks to Tamsui River. But the river blockage became worse and the development center was then moved to the Eastern. Dadaocheng declined. However, the old shops of Dadaocheng still working hard. Today, 100 years after, Dadaocheng becomes an unique old street district.

Dihua Street is the center of Dadaocheng. We can still see blocks of old buildings.

Apart from the old shops, many small and new business moves to Dadaocheng. The mix of the old and new brings Dadaocheng a new style.

It’s the Dadaocheng Wharf, which was the most crowded place of Taipei. Today it becomes a peaceful park. There are still ferry to the other side of Tamsui River.

Suddenly there’s rain. I couldn’t take more photos and ended the visit.

I never plan my schedule or read tourist book during traveling. Someone may said it will waste a lot of time. But I always find something special, some place special. It is the greatest surprise of my trip.

It’s still not the end of my taipei’s trip. Please look forward to the next post!
