Hong Kong Snapshop (104) - Causeway Bay 004

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hi Guys! In the newest Hong Kong Snapshot series, I will introduce the story of Causeway Bay. Causeway Bay is at the HK Island. When HK is a world known city, Causeway Bay is a tourists known district. It is a centre of tourism, shopping, culture, entertainment and business, and is a must go place for every HK local and tourist. Causeway Bay has the second most expensive street in the world, and countless international brands. It is the first choice for many international companies to settle in Asia. To introducing Causeway Bay, I firstly have to introduce it’s history of development. Last time, we talked about most of the land in Causeway Bay was auctioned by Jardine Matheson to build warehouse, docks and offices. This time, we will talk about the rest of the land to be owned by another family.

Since the opening of HK in 1841, Causeway Bay had become the world of Jardines for nearly half a century until the entering of the Lee Family. In the 19th century, people of HK mainly had these major entertainments: Cantonese Opera, films and brothels. In the early 20th century, influenced by the Europe and USA, HK had its first theme park in 1915: Cheng Yuen in Happy Valley. It caused great noises and attracted many people to visit. After a while, another theme park called the Happy Valley Playground was built next to Cheng Yuen.

Theme park became a new business in HK. Tai Bak Hai in Sai Wan and Ming Yuen in North Point became two new theme parks in HK. Instead of garden landscape and restaurant, Tai Bak Lau and Ming Yuen also added motor-driven games, performances and night markets etc. At the same time, the Lee family built the Lee Garden in Causeway Bay. Lee Hysan, the leader of the Lee Family, was an American overseas Chinese. He found the huge business opportunity in HK and moved to HK to run the cloth business. Later he also ran the opium business and soon became the “king of opium” in HK. In around 1930s, he bought the East Point Hill in Causeway Bay from Jardines and built the “Lee Garden”. Since then, Happy Valley Playground, Tai Bak Lau, Ming Yuen and Lee Garden were listed as “the four theme parks in HK”. East Point Hill was then changed to Lee Garden Hill.

Later, the department stores in Central and Sheung Wan also built small playgrounds on their roof top with games and performances. People then chose those small theme parks instead of the four theme parks that are far away. Soon the four theme parks were closed. Lee Hysan rebuilt Lee Garden to film studio and started the rapid growth of HK film industry. Lee Hysan was an important contributor of HK movie. At the same time, Lee built the “Lee Theatre” at Lee Garden Hill. Lee Theatre was built with the fusion of western and Chinese style and owned the only rotating stage in HK. It was the most luxurious theatre in HK, mainly showing Cantonese operas, films and music performances. In around 1990s, Lee Theatre was converted to high-end shopping mall and commercial building. Before that, Lee Theatre was the stage of Miss Hong Kong every year.

In around 1950, Lee Hysan passed away. His son changed Lee Garden to real estate project and built a number of residential buildings. From the street names at Lee Garden Hill today, we can find a lot of traces of the Lee Family: Lee Garden Road, Hysan Road, Lan Fong Road (wife of Lee Hysan), Sunnging Road, Hoi Ping Road, Sun Wui Road, Yun Ping Road (howetown of Lee Hysan) and also Bak Sha Road, Kai Chiu Road (two famous scholar from the hometown of Lee Hysan). The new residents of Causeway Bay brought the new development.

Today, the area has become one of the most prosperous area of Causeway Bay. It has a large flow of people, cars, and also has two high-end shopping malls, the Hysan Place and Lee Garden, which are places that tourists cannot miss.

The large population of Causeway Bay built up the base for It to become the most famous tourist area in Hong Kong. In the 1980s, Japanese department stores started their business in Causeway Bay, making it a tourist hotspot. Let’s talk about it in the next post!
