War seems far away from us now. But actually, there continue to be many wars in the world. And less than 100 years ago, the whole world was still under wars. We seem to be living in a peaceful world. But, big war may happen again at any time. Last week, I visited the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence. Review the history of HK’s coastal defence, I felt that war is so closed to us.

The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence is located at Lei Yue Mun in Shau Kei Wan, which was the Lei Yue Mun Fort. The Fort was constructed more than 100 years ago and it was the most formidable redoubt in the territory. It was also one of the most important battle field when Japan attacked HK in 1941. The Fort was invoked as the training ground for the British Forces afterward. In 1993, the HK government developed the Lei Yue Mun Fort into the Museum of Coastal Defence, which present the 600-year history of Hong Kong’s coastal defences.

Exhibitions of the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence

Permanent Exhibition

DSC03118.jpg

The HK Museum of Coastal Defence can be divided into three parts: the permanent exhibition galleries, the special exhibition gallery and the Historical Trail. The permanent exhibition galleries are located at the old Lei Yue Mun Redoubt. The casemates of the Redoubt are now rebuilt to galleries and show us the 600-year history of HK’s coastal defenses. There are over 400 military artefacts and numbers of graphical illustrations and multi-media programs.

Special Exhibition

The Special Exhibition is also located at the Redoubt. It irregularly displays galleries with topics related to war. The Special Exhibition now is the “Braving Untold Dangers: War Correspondents”. It reviews the emergence of war correspondents and the role they have played in wars and conflicts, while also stories of local journalists who have covered hostilities in various regions.

Historical Trail

The Historical Trail is a very important Trail in the museum It connects all the military remained in the Lei Yue Mun Fort. Lei Yue Mun is the entrance to the inner harbor of HK. The Fort was an important military power to defense HK and protect HK from the threads posed by Russia and France. Today, many militaries are still remained. After restoring, we may feel the military strength of the Fort.

South Caponier

There are three caponiers in the Trail. It was a detached and concealed defensive structure. Soldiers can enter the Redoubt from the underground passages through the Caponies. The passages were just like a maze. Walking through the passages, you may feel the stress of war and It is a delightful experience.

There is a ruined structure in the Trail. It was built in 1910 and was a battle field between the Royal Artillery and the Japanese troops. However now, there is only a ruined structure left.

At the coast, there is a rail ruins. It was the rail of the Brennan Torpedo Station. Today, The station is gone already and there is only a rail ruins left for visitors appreciation. By the way, you can enjoy the magnificient view of the Victoria Harbor here.

I had a great feeling in this journey. Today HK seems to be peaceful. Nonetheless, less that 100 years ago, there were such memories of wars in HK. Today, there are actually still lots of conflicts between countries in Asia. War may happen again. So, please let us treasure the peaceful time now. Don’t spend time on those small stuffs. Actually, we are the blessed generation comparing with the history.

I will introduce the HK’s coastal defence in the next few articles. Please support!
