The Maya Ruins of Tulum

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Before attending Satoshi Roundtable, which will take place at an undisclosed venue in Mexico, I am spending some days  in Tulum at the Caribbean coast, which is famous for its Maya ruins.

Tulum was one of the last cities built by the Maya. It had its best time between the 13th and 15th centuries, when it was an important port and trade centre, especially for jade, obsidian and copper.

The ruins are situated on tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Today they are a popular tourist attraction.

Tulum, which was also know as Zama, the City of Dawn, managed to resist the invading Spaniards for about 70 years. But the Mayas suffered from diseases brought by the Spanish settlers and finally had to abandon their once important city.

The Maya temples were orginially painted in bright colours and decorated with statues of gods. Very few of these paintings have survived. All that stays are the rocks the temples were built of.

The ruins are inhabited by many leguans.

Tulum is a beautiful place and definitely worth a visit!

wow.........nice place. i like this place.
thanks for sharing

Idyllic 😍

Beautiful photos. Thanks for the narrative explaining the history. I am always fascinated by ancient civilizations.

The western hemisphere had advanced civilizations before the European explorers came and none of them survived. Yet the Asian societies continued after they were "found" and settled by the European nations.

There are no accidents in Nature. I can't even imagine the karma of what must have been done by the western natives sometime in their past to have deserved what happened to them. It is really a shame.

Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the Crypto Conference.

i like it so i save this pick.
