President Donald Trump, speaking alongside South Korean President Moon Jae-in, declared Friday US patience with the North Korean regime "is over."
"The era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed," Trump said in a statement from the Rose Garden. "And, frankly, that patience is over."
While Moon has been arguing for greater engagement with Pyongyang as the best way to put the brakes on its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, Trump made clear that he was in no mood to pursue diplomacy with a regime he accused of having no respect for human life.
And while Moon announced that Trump had accepted an offer to visit Seoul later this year, the leaders failed to map out any kind of joint strategy on how best to deal with the threat posed by the North Korean leadership.
Trump on Friday warned that the US is facing "the threat of the reckless and brutal regime in North Korea" that "has no regard for the safety and security of its people or its neighbors" and vowed the US would continue to act to defend US interests and allies in the region.
South Korea President Says:
Mr Trump accepted an invitation to visit South Korea later this year.
He also vowed to start reducing the US trade deficit by renegotiating a trade deal with South Korea.
The US had a $27.6 billion trade deficit with South Korea last year.
Mr Trump said: We cannot allow that to continue. That's not a good deal.
