Dhaka Traffic Jam
The sad mood of Dhaka is the traffic congestion
In the world of advanced and undeveloped countries, traffic congestion is a widely discussed problem. The traffic congestion has caused more than two-tenths, even one-tier problem. This problem is difficult in developing countries, especially its impact on the economy is very negative. In Europe 200 billion euros a year, US $ 100 billion is lost due to traffic congestion. According to the World Bank, due to traffic congestion, 32 lakh hours of work is being lost every day in Dhaka city. Its losses in Bangladesh's economy are about 11.4 billion dollars a year, which is equal to 7 percent of the country's GDP. Saying, as well as financial losses, the traffic congestion on society and environment also has adverse effects.
Dhaka is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, where various development and changes are being achieved. In addition to the capital Dhaka, Dhaka has become the center of administrative, commercial, education, health, political activity and culture. People from all corners of the country are moving towards their various needs, towards Dhaka, increasing the population of the city. This excess population is causing artificial problems in the city, among which the traffic jam
Recently BRAC Institute of Government and Development (BIGD) of BRAC University, Annual Report on Urban Prediction Report 2016: 'Traffic Congestion in Dhaka City Governance Perspective' publishes. The purpose of this research was to review the governance related to traffic congestion and to review the recommendations related to traffic congestion, to suggest the strengthening of the problems related to the transport of traffic and the establishment of the transport organizations in Dhaka.
Studies show that the population of Dhaka city has increased by 5x in the last 35 years. 32 percent of the total population living in the city live in the city. Every day an average of 1,07,700 people are coming to Dhaka in search of food, at the end of the year, the number is 6 lakh 20 thousand. The supply is very limited in comparison to the demand of the city. There should be 25 percent of the city's size of roads for public transportation in a city, but only 8 percent of the city. On the other hand, the narrow road length is higher than the main road, which makes the traffic jam more intensively. According to the state-owned Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTA), on the street of the city every day 400 new cars are being added. In the last two decades, its total number has reached nearly 1 million, most of which are private cars. The number of public transport is very limited compared to the demand. That is, the lack of public transport in busy times is one of the main reasons for the sufferings of the passengers. At present, 158 companies and 5407 buses and minibuses are allowed to operate on 168 routes in the city, in which about 3,000 buses transport 15 lakh people daily. These numbers are extremely low compared to the demand. In order to meet the demand of vehicles, passengers used to use buses, sedan-operated autorickshaws, cyclists etc. alongside the buses. At present there are 8 to 10 lakh rickshaws in Dhaka city and 16 to 2 million people are involved directly and indirectly with rickshaw operations. But the city corporation-approved rickshaw is about 80 thousand. Despite the prohibition of rickshaw movement on the main road of the city, it has not been closed.
