Turkeys first woman aviator Sabiha Gökçen

Sabiha Gökçen, the first female pilot of Turkey and the world's first female war pilot, was selected by American Air Force College in 1996 as one of 20 aviators who wrote their name in world history for her contribution to aviation history.

Sabiha Gökçen was the daughter of Hafıs İzzet Bey and Hayriye Hanim and she came to the world in Bursa on 22 March 1913 as the second child of the couple. Gökçen, whose education was supported by her brother because of the loss of her father at a young age, met Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, who was on a Bursa tour in 1925. Atatürk, who learns the life story, has adopted her to Istanbul with the permission of her family and continued her education in Üsküdar Girls High School. Since then she was the spiritual daughter of Atatürk.

Gökçen, who was enrolled in the Turkish Bird School of Civil Aviation in the Turkish Aeronautical Association in 1935, went to the Crimea after successfully completing the training and was educated in the Koktebel High Glider School for six months.

Gökçen, who made her first motor flight experience on February 25, 1936, received special flight training at the Eskisehir Flight School, which did not take female students at that time, at the request of Atatürk between 1936-1937.

Gökçen, who was assigned to suppress Dersim Events and participated in Tunceli Operation in 1937, won the first female pilot title of world history. Thanks to her role in this movement, she was awarded with the Medal of Honor by the Turkish Aeronautical Association.

In 1938, Gökçen served as a flight chef of the Turkish Aeronautical Association between 1938 and 1955, inspiring female pilots in the world by leaving for five days on a Balkan tour. 1940, married Gökçen, Lieutenant Kemal Esiner. After 3 years of marriage husband died.

Sahiba Gökçen, who has experienced flying with 22 different civil aircrafts and warplanes during her flight career, performed her last flight in 1996 on her trip to the United States in honor of being 83 years old, and on 22 March 2001 at heGülhane Military Medical Academy she grieved her eyes.

Gökcens surname was given to her on December 19, 1934 by Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, which means to depend on the sky. Sabiha Gökçen, who has made great contributions to Turkish aviation throughout her life and who works for raising the status of Turkish women in the world, has been awarded to T.H.K, International Aviation Federation, Romanian Army, U.S.A. including a variety of armies, associations and organizations over a total of 30 engagements, merit, medals, plaques and patents was tagged.

Her name was also given to the International Airport in Istanbul.
