Saint Thecla Church

Thecla was a saint of early Christian church. It is known that Thecla, who was popular in the Byzantine period, was from Iconion, today’s Konya, and then she lived in Silifke and died here.

Architectural Features

The underground church was constructed in the 4th century. It is known that the remains of the upper section were built at the second half of the 5th century, AD. Today, 4/1 part of the church apse remains. This basilica planned building replaced a small church previously taking place here. It is 80 meter long and 36,80 meter wide. At the present day, the votive church to 150 meters northeast of the existing cistern was built by Emperor Xenon as an offering for Saint Thecla between the years 476-491 AD. There was a bathhouse between the votive church and the small church.
The cistern, which is 14,40 meters long and 11,10 meters wide, is located to the east of basilica and is dated to the first half of the 6th century AD.

Aya Tekla Kilisesi-Azize Tekla

Tekla erken dönem Hıristiyan kilisesinin azizlerindendi. Bizans döneminde oldukça popüler olan Tekla’nın aslen bugünkü Konya’da yer alan Iconion’dan olduğu ve daha sonra Silifke’de yaşamına devam edip burada öldüğü bilinmektedir.

Mimari Özellikleri

Yeraltı kilisesinin 4. yy’da inşa edildiği, üst kısmındaki kalıntıların MS 5. yüzyılın 2.yarısında yapıldığı bilinmektedir. Bugün ayakta tek kalan kilise apsisinin 1/4 dir. Bazilika planlı bu yapının daha önce burada bulunan küçük bir kilisesin yerine yapıldığı bilinmektedir. 80 metre uzunluğunda ve 36.80 metre genişliğindedir. Günümüzde mevcut sarnıcın 150 metre doğusunda yer alan Adak kilisesi İmparator Zenon tarafından MS. 476-491 yılları arasında Azize Thekla’ya sunu olarak yapılmıştır. Adak kilisesi ve küçük kilise arasında bir hamam yapısı bulunmaktaydı.
14,40 metre uzunluğunda ve 11,10 metre eninde olup Bazilika’nın doğusunda bulunan sarnıç 6. yy’ın ilk yarısında yapılmıştır.
