Büyük sarı gözleriyle tanınan beyaz bir kuştur.
Uzunlukları 60 cmdir.
Yetişkin erkekler neredeyse bembeyazdır.
Yükseklerden pike yaparak veya yere yakın uçarak avlanabilirler.
Kar baykuşları genellikle 5-8 yumurta bırakır. Yuvalarını çoğunlukla yosunlarla ve tüylerle kaplarlar.
Kar baykuşunun değişik ötüşleri vardır. Ötüşü hemen hemen ördek sesine benzeyen krek-krek-krek-krek, ve pyee-pyee-pyee-pyeedir.
Kar baykuşlarını yaşam süresi 10 yıldır.
