No wonder @kusadasi launched a social responsibility project among Turkish steemians at the beginning of the week and asked us to feed the street animals. There are hundreds of thousand cats roaming free in Istanbul. They are literally everywhere. Stray cats, but as happy as house cats, if not happier, because although nobody owns them, they are cared for collectively by the community and they are free as a bird. (The same cannot be said for the birds themselves in Istanbul though.)

If you have never been to Turkey, it might be a bit difficult to appreciate the ‘intertwined lives’ of cats and Istanbulites. Don’t be startled if at least one cat comes and jumps on your lap while you are sitting on a park bench, let me tell you that much. Oh, one more thing, don’t be surprised if you see one of them sleeping on a chair next to your table in a restaurant’s yard or even inside.
The people here all -or most of them, anyway- cherish cats!
It is partly because of the stories of the Prophet Mohammed’s encounters with cats, but mostly because they have been in Istanbul for thousands of years, probably as a solution to rat problem, and now they are the ‘rightful’ inhabitants of the city.
In fact, they even took center stage in a 2016 documentary directed by Ceyda Torun.
Seven of Istanbul street cats -The Hustler, The Lover, The Psycho, The Social Butterfly, The Hunter, The Gentleman and The Player- star in Kedi a.k.a. Nine Lives: Cats in Istanbul.
Ceyda Torun follows each of them throughout their daily life and interviews with people who interact with them. In the documentary humans are secondary to the cats, of course, and it’s turned out that ‘our cats’ are more than just a cute face; they have also inbred talent to pose for the camera.
Kedi became a surprise box office hit in the US ($2.7m) and IndieWire described it as “the Citizen Kane of the cat documentaries!” If you are into cats and have not seen it yet, a treat awaits you.

@kusadasi’nın bu hafta başında Türk steemian’lar arasında düzenlediği sosyal sorumluluk projesinde bizden sokak hayvanlarını beslememizi istemesinde şaşılacak bir şey yok. İstanbul’da yüz binlerce kedi sokaklarda serbestçe dolaşıyor. Kelimenin gerçek anlamıyla her yerdeler. Sokak kedileri ama en az ev kedileri kadar mutlular, belki onlardan daha bile mutlular, çünkü elbirliğiyle özenle bakılıyorlar ve kuşlar kadar özgürler. (İstanbul’daki kuşlar için aynısı söylenemez gerçi.)

Sokak hayvanlarını seviyoruz. En başta da kedileri. Bunun bir sebebi Hz. Muhammed’in kedilerle muhabbetiyse bir diğer sebebi de kedilerin binlerce yıldır -muhtemelen başta fare problemine bir çözüm olarak- bu topraklarda yaşıyor olmaları. Bu şehir onların.
Hatta içlerinden yedi tanesi 2016 yılında, yönetmenliğini Ceyda Torun’un yaptığı Kedi isimli belgeselde başrol oynadılar: Sarı, Bengü, Psikopat, Deniz, Aslan Parçası, Duman ve Gamsız.

Kedi’de Ceyda Torun onları günlük rutinleri içinde takip ediyor ve onlarla ilgilenen insanlarla röportajlar yapıyor. İnsanlar elbette ikinci planda, başrol kedilerin. Ve belgesel açıkça ortaya koyuyor ki kedilerimiz sadece şirin birer yüzden ibaret değiller, aynı zamanda kameraya poz vermede doğuştan yetenekliler.
Film Amerika’da sürpriz bir şekilde büyük bir gişe başarısı yakaladı.
