What is routing ?

in #topology6 years ago

Hey folks , I would like to explain routing to a certain extent in an easy to understand method that anyone can understand . Routing quite simply is literally a route that data packets take to get to their destination.

So where does routing happen? It occurs on devices that are capable of creating routes most often reffered to as a layer 3 network.

Devices used are routers and core switches which are layer 3 capable which in most cases are more expensive than standard layer 2 access switches.

The above image depicts clearly how a packet is routed to get to the destination. The traveling through different router are reffered to as hops.

In our typical network environment we will only have one hop which is our core switch which is then routed within our environment or passed to the firewall to handle all external traffic.

Thanks for reading.
