TOKYO 2020 in Japan

TOKYO 2020 was the 32nd Olympic Games, held in Tokyo, Japan and other cities for 17 days from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
TOKYO 2020は、2021年7月23日から8月8日までの17日間、日本の東京都などで開催された第32回オリンピック競技大会である。

11,092 participants from 205 countries and regions took part in 339 events in 33 sports over 19 actual days (including two days when some men's and women's soccer and softball games were held prior to the opening ceremony).
205の国と地域から11,092人が参加し、実質19日間（開会式に先立ち男女サッカーとソフトボールの一部試合が行われた2日間を含む）に33競技339種目が行われた。

In September 2013, the 125th IOC General Assembly decided on Tokyo as the host city. The Games were held in Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, Ibaraki, Shizuoka, Fukushima, Miyagi, and Hokkaido (nine prefectures in total), in addition to Tokyo, for the first time in 57 years. The organizing committee is the Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOCOG), and the honorary president of the Games is the Emperor Tokujin.
2013年9月の第125次IOC総会で開催都市が東京に決定した。東京での開催は、1964年大会以来、57年ぶりとなり、競技は東京都の他に、埼玉県、神奈川県、千葉県、茨城県、静岡県、福島県、宮城県と北海道（計9都道県）で行われた。大会組織委員会は東京オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会組織委員会（TOCOG）であり、大会名誉総裁は天皇徳仁である。

Conducted in a challenging environment

Due to the worldwide outbreak of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the Games were postponed one year from the summer 2020 schedule. Although the postponement changed the year of the Games, the name "Tokyo 2020" remains unchanged. This was the first time in the history of the modern Olympic Games that the Games were postponed, the first time in the history of the Summer and Winter Games to be held in odd-numbered years, and the first time in 121 years since the 1900 Paris Olympics that the Summer Games were held in a normal year instead of a leap year.
新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）の世界的流行を受け、2020年夏の開催日程から1年延期して開催された。大会延期により開催年は変わったが「東京2020」の名称に変更はなく進められた。開催の延期は近代オリンピック史上初めてのことであり、なおかつ奇数年に開催されるのも夏季・冬季問わず史上初、また、1900年のパリオリンピック以来121年ぶりに閏年でなく平年に開催された夏季オリンピックとなった。

In the Olympic concept that was stated by the then Bid Committee and others during the selection of the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics in 2013, the bid was successful on the basis of "recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake" and "the world's least expensive (compact) Olympics. However, due to the circumstances described below, criticisms were raised that the concept deviated from and contradicted the original objectives.
2013年に行われた2020年夏季オリンピックの開催地選考の際に当時の招致委員会などが述べていたオリンピック構想では、「東日本大震災からの復興」や「世界一金のかからない（コンパクト）五輪」を掲げて招致を成功させた。しかし、後述の経緯から当初の趣旨から乖離・矛盾しているという批判も挙がった。
