Have You Ever Put Paper Over A Toilet Seat For Protection In A Public Restroom?

If so, you probably did this thinking it gave you some extra defense against germs and bacteria, which were no doubt smeared all over the seat.

Putting A Liner On The Seat Does Not Help.

Actually, putting paper products down doesn't offer much protection from bacteria at all. Experts say the main purpose of providing liners is to ease our minds — to make us believe we're being cleaner than we really are.

Why Liners And Toilet Paper Are Filthy.

Toilet seat liners and toilet paper, which are always located close to the bowl, catch splash when the toilet is flushed. This is because nobody puts the lid down when they flush. Of course, it's possible these paper products could be dirty for other reasons, too.

The Splash Zone.

The spray from those public toilets can reach up to two meters high, so the toilet paper and liners are steadily exposed throughout the day.

So, it turns out putting papers down won't give you any added protection. But the good news is that toilet seats don't actually transmit diseases. This does not mean they're totally clean, of course. Only, that our skin acts as a barrier against any harmful bacteria or diseases present.
