To celebrate the recent legislation of same-sex marriage in Australia, Trikone Australasia showcased a gay Indian wedding at the 40th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. The float entry from the South Asian LGBT support group depicted two Indian grooms getting married in a traditional mandap (sacred canopy set up for Hindu weddings). “Our entry this year sends a strong message to the wider South Asian community that people who identify as gay or lesbian can be accepted for who they are and can love who they choose,” said Kunal Mirchandani, spokesperson from Trikone.

To help bring this vision to life, Trikone partnered with Poornima Sharma from Indian Dance Centre, who choreographed the marching routine for the baraatis (dancers in an Indian wedding procession). Over 45 marchers danced to lively bhangra beats and foot-tapping desi remixes of popular Western songs. “I am thrilled to be part of this project which means so much to different people. Australia has taken a major step towards LGBT rights, and I hope that other South Asian countries take notice,” said Poornima.

The Mardi Gras Parade was held at Oxford Street, Darlinghurst.
