How to give constructive criticism

in #tips6 years ago

Criticism is an important thing that can go two ways, you can criticize people to either make them better or make them even worse. There are some ways to give criticism to your employees, team members, family members or anyone out there, which will not make them feel bad and disgraced. This type of criticism is known as constructive criticism.
Here is a list of 5 ways to give a constructive criticism to help you out on your next feedback

  1. Timing and Situation
The first thing to remember while criticizing someone is TIMING and then SITUATION. It matters a lot, for example, suppose you grabbed your team member’s arm right after he came back from a big meeting and you started saying him that you were not so good there with your speech and stuff, what would he think? How would he feel? Always keep in mind the situation and timing, and then say what you want to criticize him/her about, by focusing on the points mentioned below.
  2. Use Feedback Sandwich Method
Do you know what a sandwich is? Of course, you know what it is! There is a method that can help make your feedback or criticism way more constructive, that method is known as the feedback sandwich method.
All you have to do is start by a positive comment to make the situation much better than fire the real criticism/message you want to deliver and then again cover it with another positive ending. For example, if you want to advise your worker to perform his work with more dedication, this is how you can do it by using feedback sandwich method.
“Hey! I really know your dedication and work goals inside your mind and trust me I am proud of it, but it would be much better if you pay a bit more attention to the work, in this way it will make you a shining star and may even become a reason for a raise in your salary”
  3. Never make it personal
If you want to open fire on any person with your words, always remember not to be personal at any cost. You should never judge a person’s personality for his work or job he does, if you do not like the thing he did, just say it directly rather than pointing your finger to his character.
    For example:
Destructive criticism: You are a loser!
Constructive criticism: You need to focus on how to make things work, rather than doing nothing and loose.
  4. Always check your tone
No matter what words you use for a feedback, if you do not have a soft and gentle tone, the feedback will sound rude. Same goes the other way, if your words are a bit harsh but said in a gentle and polite way, the feedback will sound much positive and constructive.
  5. Use an example
If things are not working out the way you want, rather than being negative and giving destructive criticism, give an example to compliment your feedback.
    For example:
Destructive criticism: You should work better than this or else you may fail miserably.
Constructive criticism: You do really good work, but have you seen john’s performance? He is really getting better and better, you can follow his pattern too to rise and shine.
