Why do tulips grow in the vase?

The tulip bunch is hardly put into the vase, it goes off. The spring flowers stretch and stretch themselves what the stuff holds. Within short time they hang the heads because they find no more hold.

In the nature growth takes place above all first by cell division. After this principle the embryo grows, for example, with the person. But also after the birth the organs, the skin, the brain grow after the same principle etc....

Nevertheless, in the plant world there is still the second principle: the cell stretching growth. And this functions in such a way: The plant trains the cells important for the growth by cell division in the first phase, then it grows only by stretching of these cells. Then the cells grow only because they take up more and more water in her inside, and, besides, extend after the length - in isolated cases up to hundredfold or even one thousand-fold her original size!

From such superlatives the cut flowers are far away. They place rather on the strategy: many cells stretch themselves a little, but in the sum nevertheless actually! What distinguishes the tulip from most other cut flowers: her cells so "zellstreckungswachstum greedily" that they themselves can continue this growth for some days after abscission of the onion, only as a cut flower by other admission of water from the vase without braking.

Tulips do not lignify

Another reason for the tulip growth in the vase is: Tulips lignify in no phase of her growth, and thus her growth talent can still develop during the blossom up to her gradual withering freely.

The exact opposite is, for example, the rose style: though the rose before the blossom puts down a huge growth, however, at the time of the rose blossom the cells are surrounded in the rose style so strongly by Verholzungen that they cannot further grow in the vase any more. Therefore, grows with a rose then only - her wonderful blossom.
