Time's Up.

in #timesup7 years ago

The Golden Globes this year were iconic for the out right support for the Time's Up movement. Everyone wore black to the event in support of the movement. Over the past few months leading up to the Golden Globes many famous actors, actresses and celebrities in Hollywood spoke out about their sexual assault experiences leading to many people loosing their jobs in Hollywood and more attention being created for this massive issue in our society. All the actresses at the Golden Globes spoke about the movement in some capacity in their speeches. It was beautiful and terribly disappointing.

It was beautiful because women were given ,even if it was just for a short time, a safe space to share their thoughts and their own experiences free of prejudice. But it was terribly disappointing because not one of the men spoke out, their speeches were bland and didn't properly discuss the movement if at all. Sexual assault is not only experienced by women although they are a majority of people whom are victimized. The male award winners didn't have to share their experiences with sexual assault however they should have been spokesmen for men on the issue but they weren't. There are so many factors which increase your chances of being sexually assaulted such as: gender (or lack there of), race and sexual orientation (or lack there of).

Although the chances of me being sexually assaulted are slim due to my race and gender it is because of other factors that put me at a higher risk of sexual and physical assault. I am not a woman but I know how it feels to be in a public space and feel unsafe where other people are. I know what it's like to sit in a bar and try not to draw attention to myself because I am afraid of being singled out. I know what it feels like to question every aspect of how you present yourself before you go out because you are afraid that some aspect of your appearance might make you unsafe. I am fortunate enough to have never been assaulted sexually but I am aware of what it feels like to be afraid of being a victim. I am not a woman but I understand their fear. I am not a woman but I am also a victim of a poisoned society. Time's Up not only for people who assault women but for people who feel they have a right to someone else's body.

It doesn't matter what you wear, who you flirt with, lead on, what your sexual/gender identity is, no one has the right to your body. No means No, no matter what you are doing and where you are. You owe no one anything, you have the right to retaliate, you have the right to call for justice. You also have the right to a better society where toxic masculinity doesn't prevent you from talking about your own victimization and a society where toxic masculinity doesn't claim ownership of another's body. Time's Up and now it's up to you to speak out and help make a change for the people who can't.
