Urban Death Project: Where the dead is responsible for climate change.

The Urban Death Project is a 501c3 based in Seattle, Wa. Their primary objective is to change the way we care for the dead here in the United States. What is very unique about this project is the method of Recomposition they plan to employ in urban settings. Recomposition Centers would require erecting an urban multi-layered structure which is described as "Part public park, part funeral home, part memorial..." The idea is that after having a memorial service, you would then walk your loved ones to the top of the Recoomposition Center, lay them on a bed of wood chips and then cover them with wood chips. As the process of decomposition happens, more chips will be added to the top of the pile. According to Katrina Spade, the founder and director, “Each body slowly moves downward as it’s turned into soil. It’s like you’re settling into your new existence … no longer human, now you’re soil.” I really do love the idea of changing the way we bury our dead. Make it simple, make it natural.

Here is where my problem lies, the overall goal seems to be about averting climate change. The idea is that current memorializing practices take up too much land, pollute the soil, and cremating uses too much fossil fuel. From my understanding, Urban Death Project aims to reduce greenhouse gasses by minimizing the demand for fossil fuels when making coffins, burial vaults, embalming practices, and the methane created from the processes. I find it to be very silly that the call to action is based around the global cooling, global warming, and now climate change agenda. I'd love to see this project come to fruition but in all honesty just
