TIL: The Average Person Blinks About 15-20 Times Per Minute
Eyes are one of the most important organs in our body as they are literally our windows to reality. And this is true for most of the species here on Earth. Eyes are among nature’s greatest creations.
But eyes are delicate too and so they need protection. That’s why eyes come with eyelids which serve as a protection against the outside agents that may harm them. They also facilitate lubrication of eyes, helping them function normally.
To protect our eyes from the many tiny particles floating around in the air, and for lubrication purposes, we blink very regularly. It is automatic and we don’t even think about it.
That is why I was surprised to learn today that we blink on an average, 15- 20 times per minute! That’s like 1200 times per hour and a staggering 28,800 times a day!
And we don’t even notice most of this function. But apart from the protection and lubrication, there may be one more reason why we blink so much.
Scientists say that, according to their research, blinking provides the brain with momentary rests even if it is only for a split second. They say that it allows the brain to go into offline mode or to wander off.
It’s fascinating to realise that there are millions of things happening in our bodies that are working perfectly just like a programmed software and that we are not even aware of them.
