TIL: How [super-awesome] google search tips and tricks enable us to find what we are looking for!

in #til8 years ago (edited)

Today, I was going through various articles and videos about efficiently using the google search engine. And what I found was really an eye opener. Most of us just know google as a search engine with few options of search and in return google gives us 1000s of results. Then we crawl through those results to find the most suitable result for us. And many times that suitable search does not prove good to us.

So, how should we search on google to get most fruitful results. Actually there are 100s of great features available in google search, but, here I will try to write down few of the very powerful tips which can help us in getting desired results:

                                                                                                           source

In site search:

Few of the websites do not have a search bar and hence you can not search the content within the site. Here, google search engine can help us by using:

website_url: content to be searched

example:

warnerbros.com: storm

It will search for the content "storm" in "warnerbros.com" website.

Exact string search:

When we search for a sentence on google, we get loads of loads of results in less than a second's time. But most of these results will only have a part of the sentence searched by you. If you want to search the website/source where you get the exact sentence match, then help yourself by using:

"sentence"    [ use double quotes before and after the sentence]

example:

"I love steemit"

It will search for all sources/websites which have "I live steemit" included in the content. How great it is :)

Search for missing words:

Sometimes it happens we remember few words from a song or we forget few words of a song or some phrase. Google can help us in recollecting that. This is how we can use it:

How to * a bed

This will fill * with most appropriate  and familiar word like [make] and you will recollect what you were looking for.

Search filetype:

If we are looking for a content to be searched in some specific file format, this trick can help us doing so by using:

tom and jerry filetype:pdf

It will search for "tom and jerry" and will list down results in pdf file format only.

Search only in title:

By typing [allintitle: title-to-be-searched] gives us source/websites which has the specified text in the title of the page.

example:

allintitle: srijan

It will search for "srijan" in the titles of the page and will list down those results.

Search Tools:

source: I captured this and uploaded to postimg :)

As highlighted in the image, google search has an option to select "Search tools". On clicking on that, it gives us further options to refine our search criteria on basis of country and by the time when the content was posted. It really help people in narrowing down the search results

There are lot more tips and tricks. Use above tricks to find more tricks  and check how smart you are in finding these!!
