There is no such thing as a legal name change in the Netherlands
Today
I learned something new. Well, yesterday... In the Netherlands there is no such thing as a legal name change.
Strangely most Dutch people don't seem to know this either!
So they will be fixing the database at the Amsterdam Gemeente. This was holding up the progress of my application for a benefit. I was given a handwritten letter by a city hall staff person to give to the welfare agency staff. I can't get the name change correction done unless I have a registration address from the DWI (welfare) and they haven't given me the address yet.
Hopefully this will be the end of the saga.
😎
We can't stop here! This is Whale country!

Good luck, and I hope the end of this saga works in your favor!
are you dealing with the cold ok?
Yeah just a bit of a cold but mostly beaten now. I don't stay outside unless I have to and while I could be better dressed it is mostly enough.
It's very interesting post!!
That sounds like something I'd want a second opinion on. Surely it's just as typical in the Netherlands for women's names to change when they marry?
Yes there is that, but that's it.
btw If they're tripping over this now, is it that they made a 'mistake' the first time you got this benefit?
It was Schiphol Passport Office that got it wrong changing it. Then I opened a bank account and applied for a payment and got an address registration. So the local government records were in the changed name. For some reason it only started a problem at the end of the process.
It will not be a problem from now on.
