Safety in cars is a very important issue for manufacturers, either because they are interested in the safety of drivers or simply to avoid the demands of them.

Mercedes Benz has created a package of safety systems called "Pre-Safe" included in their new models. One of these is a thing called "Pre-Safe Sound".

The "Pre-Safe Sound" works milliseconds before the collision with another car activating a physical reflex of protection of the ear. The idea is to protect it from the sound expected by the collision and is based on the Stapedius reflex.

"Stapedius reflex: when the stapedius muscle contracts, the connection between the ear drum and the inner ear is weakened. This means that some of the sound pressure is reflected in the ear drum instead of it all being transmitted to the inner ear." - Credit

All this is achieved by reproducing a sound through the car's sound system called "Pink Noise".
