TIL that the Better Business Bureau is a Non-profit Organization that Earns Hundreds of Millions in Profit.

in #til7 years ago (edited)

The Better Business Bureau (abbreviated as BBB), founded in 1912, is a non-profit organization focused on advancing market confidence in the United States and Canada.

I see this logo and it makes me laugh

Well, TIL that this Non-profit Organization "profited", only in 2013, almost 200 million dollars.

Most of that money comes from membership payments of thousands of companies. These payments vary depending on the size of the company and of course you can also buy extra accreditation and plaques that confirm the super quality of the products or the goodies of the company that pays those extras.

And not everyone can have BBB accreditation. You must "See if you currently meet BBB eligibility requirements" with a FREE(It's like it's written on the page) consultation ;)

Well, the thing gets a little more disturbing when you investigate and in the blog of BBB you find that "More Consumers Than Ever Checking BBB.org When Making Purchasing Decisions".

The BBB is just like the ratings agencies on wall street. If your business is doing wrong, you can pay them to make it look good. It's all about the bottom line.

Agencies like this will be a thing of the past very soon. Thank you for the post!

I really hope so... For me it was crazy to discover that there are more people looking for that logo or the rates of the BBB expecting good quality!
You are welcome and thank to you too for your comment :)

Yeah, i see the 3 B's logo..it might as well be a chuck-e-cheese logo as far as im concerned. they can be bought, and often are for a fee.

The question is, and always will be.
Can we Trust them?
or have they been bought?

Wel if you have to pay a fee for the entrance but also

you can also buy extra accreditation and plaques that confirm the super quality of the products or the goodies of the company that pays those extras.

I think they had definitely been bought.... since a long time.

A lot of profits go to Non-profit organizations... Money its a funny thing isn't it?

hehehehe yes :) ... and also the least understandable thing I've ever seen in my life.

One of my largest gripes are of so-called 501c-3 non profits (and foundations especially) that gain a tax exempt status but are either engaging in something other (often nefarious) than what the charter indicates or are being used as a tax dodge.
