TIL that honesty is always the best policy

in #til8 years ago

Throughout the course of your life there will be several defining moments that dictate just about everything else that happens in your life. So, in reality your life can be summed up by just a few defining moments with the rest just being a summation of how you responded to these specific moments...

During my time on this planet I have encountered a few of these moments thus far and I am sure I will encounter several more before my time here is done. From these moments, there are two major pieces of wisdom that I have been able to take away...

The first is that it is always easier to ask for forgiveness rather than to ask permission...

and

The second is that it will always benefit you in the long run to tell the truth...

(That first one was me just kidding by the way) :)

The second one is really my big take away from my defining moments here on earth and it is one that I have been thinking a lot about lately because of some things that have been taking place in my life.

At times telling the truth will seem like the hardest thing in the world to do, and it very well might be. The truth may make your life harder, it may make you lose friends, and it may make some people not like you... however, telling the truth has far greater benefits in the long run than it has negatives...

For one, and most importantly, telling the truth means you don't have to remember so many things! ;)

In all seriousness though, telling the truth preserves your reputation among your peers, it strengthens relationships, it builds trust, it relieves feelings of guilt and stress, it fosters an environment where those around you will also feel comfortable telling the truth and encourages them to do so. As people see that you are human and make mistakes but are willing to own up to those mistakes, it gives them the freedom and encouragement to also own up to their own mistakes. Fostering that kind of environment is priceless.

You can tell 9 truths and 1 lie... but people will only remember your one lie, that is why it is important to always speak the truth. From that moment on people will never know if they can fully trust you as your 9 truths will now come into question. This is especially true with relationships. Yes the truth may hurt for the time being and make things a bit rocky, but a lie can destroy the relationship forever...

Now that I have beaten you over the head with all my holier than thou preaching... There is one instance where lying is not only permitted but I would encourage it... and that is when your significant other asks you if a certain dress makes her look fat...

In that instance you must always say "No!", no matter what your real thoughts might be ;)

Live well my friends!

What a great piece, thank you for these wise words (and the laugh in the end :-)). Of course: upvoted and resteemed. The truth is the only way.

You may have been kidding but that doesn't make it any less true.
almost thirty percent of the 'workers' in this country. (and I use that term loosely), those employed by all of the various governments, their job number one is to 'just say no'. Best to just do it...and don't say anything.

Other wise you won't EVER get anything done AND you'll pay huge fees just for the privilege of asking.

That is very true! Good point. I guess my kidding's do sometimes have a kernel of truth to them ;)

well said captain. you always come up with words of wisdom

Thank you, but I was only a Sargent.

Honesty is important, no matter what. Especially if it hurts. It will make you stronger :)

Ok so here's a dilemma a friend of mine came up with one time in regards to honesty. When his wife asks "does this dress make me look fat?" should he be honest and say "no, it's your fat that makes you look fat"?

Haha I am not touching this one with a ten foot pole... good luck to your friend! ;)
