I've played Chess for many years. Played in a Chess Club.

Won a lot of games, lost a lot. It is a fantastic sport/mind-game/metal exercise.
It has everything. War, Love, scheming strategy, as you try and outwit your opponent.

It is a game that will consume you.
I played against some great players. And lost.
But up until the end, I really thought I could take them.

Sometimes I did.
But it was more of jumping on their mistakes than outsmarting them.

I sat one game and watched the only move that would win me the game.
I'd been totally outplayed by a Master. But one move, my Rook to his back-line and he was Checkmate.
He, of course, had spotted this, and was ready to block, when suddenly his wife was by his side.
She had come in to watch him win.
She never came to watch him. Ever.
So he was excited. I could see that.
She started talking to person at another table.
Very bad etiquette in a Quite Chess Club game.
He was distracted, watching her, instead of the board, as his hand moved the wrong piece.
I was in quicker than you can say, "Jack Sparrow is a lousy Pirate."

Checkmate, I said very quietly.
The look of horror on his face was worth a treasure trove of Dead-Mans Cursed Inca Doubloons.

His wife started laughing and looking at me, pointed at her husband and said,
"And he told me he wins all the time."
Then she marched away.
He was crushed. Humiliated. A schoolboy again making a schoolboy error.
I felt sorry for him, as he did actually win 99.99% of the time.

But only for a bit. As I was a champion.
The King is dead, Long live the King.
And that my friend was just one game of Chess. On just one night.
And now we read our conscious is working to the beat of Quantum Mechanics.
And the Game of Chess can prove this.

Sir Roger Penrose gives an example of a Chess End Game that Artificial Intelligence cannot compute.
But seemingly our quantum consciousness can do it no problem.

We are thinking, it seems, literally outside the box.

Read On:

The theory of quantum consciousness is a controversial one and has been criticised for lacking evidence.
Sir Roger Penrose suggests that the brain works like a quantum computer.
A quantum computer is a computational machine that works through quantum mechanical phenomena - for example, the ability of a particle to be in two places at once - to perform complex calculations.
His idea is based on an interpretation of a mathematical theory which states that some calculations or 'results' cannot be proven by a computer algorithm - such as the chess problem he has created.
So if human brains are capable of proving these 'unprovable' results, then human brains cannot be described as typical computers.
Instead Sir Roger says that the brain's processes must rely, on some level, on quantum mechanical phenomena.
He suggests that in the brain, fibres known as microtubules in neurons could form the basic units of quantum computation.
Electrons in these fibres could become 'quantum entangled', a state in which both particles retain a connection and affect one another even when they are a separated.
The idea appeals because neurologists have yet to explain human consciousness through the biology of the brain.
Sir Roger hopes that scanning the brain waves of those who excel at his chess puzzle will help him find the source of human consciousness.
