Timing

in #til8 years ago

There is a great deal of truth in the statement “timing is everything”. Timing is important in everything we do.

We get taught that we must plan our day, our meals, our time to study, time to exercise, our finances, etc., but how often have you been thrown for a loop because that which you planned for your life did not materialize, sometimes by unforeseen circumstances, sometimes due to bad decisions and maybe sometimes because the timing wasn’t right.

I often felt down heartened and ready to give up when things didn’t go the way I planned. Now, looking back at my life at those times, I can see that it wasn’t the best decision at that time for me and am grateful for the different road I was pushed in which changed and shaped my life.

I read an uplifting speech that was presented to the BYU students called “Timing” by Elder Dallin H. Oaks a few days ago. I decided to also share some of his thoughts with you today, by highlighting that which stood out for me. You can read the entire speech by following this link: https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/dallin-h-oaks_timing/

Applications to Our Lives:

*Someone has said that life is what happens to us while we are making other plans. Because of things over which we have no control, we cannot plan and bring to pass everything we desire in our lives. Many important things will occur in our lives that we have not planned, and not all of them will be welcome. The tragic events of September 11th and their revolutionary consequences provide an obvious example. Even our most righteous desires may elude us, or come in different ways or at different times than we have sought to plan.

Faith and trust in the Lord give us the strength to accept and persist, whatever happens in our lives.

Timing is vital. In Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 4-5,7 you can read:
“To every thing these is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
“A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; ….
“A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to morn, and a time to dance; …….
“A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing,
“A time to keep silence, and a time to speak.”

In all the important decisions in our lives, what is most important is to do the right thing. Second, and only slightly behind the first, is to do the right thing at the right time. People who do the right thing at the wrong time can be frustrated and ineffective. They can even be confused about whether they made the right choice when what was wrong was not their choice but their timing.

Do not rely on planning every event of your life—even every important event. Stand ready to accept the Lord’s planning and the agency of others in matters that inevitably affect you. Plan, of course, but fix your planning on personal commitments that will carry you through no matter what happens.*

It is never too late!!!

My family often tells me that it’s not too late for me to still reach some of my dreams and my reply to it will mostly be: “You are crazy, I am way too old, my time for doing it is long gone.”
The saying “Don’t do what I do but do as I say” is applicable to those out there that has been stuck in the same train of thought as me. Go out and make your dreams become a reality!

Why it is never too late:

Sometimes we think we are too old to accomplish something but Morgan Freeman (just to name one), proved this negative thought wrong by receiving his first role at age 52.

Oprah Winfrey lost her job and was told she will never make it as a reporter at age 23, this did not stop her to pursue her dream and today she is one of the most successful and richest ladies in the world.

In this article, Alexis Grant wrote about why it is never too late: https://alexisgrant.com/2013/02/11/never-too-late/

*No matter how old you are when you realize you want do this, it often feels like it’s too late. Like you squandered away the last two or five or 10 or 20 or more years focusing on the wrong job, the wrong business, the wrong person, the wrong you.

But it is absolutely NEVER too late to create the life you want. Why? Because you have tomorrow. And hopefully the next day, and the day after that. And each of those days is there for you to spend how you choose. The pure fact that they haven’t yet happened, that they’re waiting for you, means they hold so much more potential than what you’ve already done.*

I’ve met a beautiful, vivacious 82 year old lady when I was 21 years old while serving a Church mission in Cape Town. She was the most active, enthusiastic, fun, sparkling and full of life old person I have ever met. This little lady always wanted to become a ballroom dancer, something she perused at the age of 62, but sadly only after her husband passed away. She became a veteran ballroom champ and showed us all her trophies she has won. I could not but admire this little lady.

If this lady could do it, so can you and I!!!

This is one of my favorite country songs as I always feel at piece when listening to it, relaxing after a hectic day.
