VIV'S POMES: Occasional visits from the Muse

in #tiger7 years ago

I wrote a parody 'updating' Blake's poem, 'Tyger, Tyger'. This is to be found in a book of parodies I wrote three years ago called 'Literary Mysteries Solved'

The Tyger – updated by Viv Doyle

Tyger, Tyger, fading fast
From the forests of the past,
What infernal hand or eye
Could snare and leave you there to die?

Under what disgraceful skies
Dies the firelight from thine eyes,
By what right dare he aspire
To put out thy eternal fire?

And what dire cold-blooded art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart has ceased to beat,
What cursed hand? & what cursed feet?

What the knife, and what the chain
Can strip thy fur for evil gain?
What man will thy poor carcase grasp?
And dare thy sacred skin to rasp?

When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did we, who raped the earth, kill thee?

Tyger, Tyger, fading fast
From the forests of the past,
What infernal hand or eye
Could snare and leave you there to die?
