I think YouTube does it because it doesn't want to lose its channel in China. Imagine if the Chinese government blocked YouTube in their country, YouTube would definitely lose a lot of users. China is the most populous country in the world. So youtube will lose a lot.
Can't really say what could have been the real reason behind the move but it definitely seems something must have been their behind this decision and doing which has really affected a lot of creators for sure, they have been deplatformed and have lost their channel :(
YouTube and their choice of content to censors is something I don't understand, by censoring anti Chinese contents does it mean they somehow support communism which is anti democratic? So many questions but why keep people under this control?
I too find this awkward ! This is truly something which indicates to a number of things and also leaves a possibility that we never figure out what the actual reason is. The most widespread opinions are that YouTube supports China, China paid YouTube, YouTube has it's own wishes... etc...
