Hey, don't make this left wing or right wing - we don't have to live in an 'either' / 'or' society. I think most of us would agree that this is absolutely despicable, whichever side of the debate you're on. I also don't think there's a need to criticise indigenous people as a whole - nor for it to be about race. Bottom line is that the guy was an asshole, whether he was white, black or blue. Cultural sensitivity is a must - we do need to understand why indigenous people might not want to conform to all parts of a society that has historically oppressed them (and they are still suffering the consequences of that, inheriting much generational trauma) - but this is just an out and out case of someone being an asshole.
I had to laugh though - comparing stoning a wombat to the Spanish Inquisition or a viking invasion on England is a new one on me. Nice rant, man! It's actually unproven that 'they' wiped out the megafauna, by the way - it's much more likely that global warming, funnily enough, and other enviro factors had a hand. This, from The Australian Museum (just a quick search - it's hot here - how's Radelaide?):
The diprotodon, one of Australia's megafauna, may have survived on the Liverpool Plains of New South Wales until about 7000 years ago. If people have been in Australia for up to 60 000 years, then megafauna must have co-existed with humans for at least 30 000 years. Regularly hunted modern kangaroos survived not only 10 000 years of Aboriginal hunting, but also an onslaught of commercial shooters.
Seems like the police closing ranks to protect one of their own a bit too. Really, they should have the balls to sack him or at least given him due reprisal and make some things clear, like don't be an asshole gleefully stoning an animal to death and posting a video. Dickheads, all round, for this one - I don't really believe it's specifically about race or equality with this one. I also think that if Aboriginal law isn't about killing animals for 'gratification' then this video certainly looks the opposite to that and it doesn't help people feel too kindly toward this kind of thing - even if their spokesperson in the NT argued it was traditional and shared with the family, it might have been a better idea to distance themselves a little and strongly suggest this kind of hunting isn't acceptable.
Oh by the way, if you put #point as a tag I'll resteem and upvote it with tokens there too.
There's all different kinds of opinions on the matter, that's what makes free speech such a valuable thing in my opinion. That's for your comments, as always. 😃
I know right! And the more we listen to each other and be prepared to be flexible, even better! Love Steem for opening my mind, as always, to new perspectives xx
Yep, that's what it's all about. It's the engagement that keeps me here, so I appreciate it when it happens.
Love you to use #auspolitics #point tags for me! Be great to hear more Aussie rants xx Love your work! And you always write so well.
I have updated the post with the tags for you. 😏
For some reason it's not turning up. Do you think it's because of the hashtags in front of the tags?
Yep, that's exactly why...I'm a dropkick. Will amend now.
Edit: Changed tags and took away the # Hope that does it @riverflows. Sorry, my mistake.
