Why No Video Sharing Platform is Beating YouTube

in #thoughts6 years ago

Before I start talking about my theory, I want to say that I now have an idea of how this platform works. I'll try to be posting content that I find myself interested in and think other people will be interested in. If you don't agree with what I'm saying, you can go read something else.

YouTube is a video sharing platform that was officially launched on December 15, 2005, and has had an incredible impact on the world, now why is YouTube so much more successful than things such as Vimeo or DailyMotion or (the now shut down website) vidme?

After YouTube's official launch, they were getting 8 million views a day. By July 2006, 65,000 videos were being uploaded every single day and had a video view count of 100 million views every day. In October 2006, Google looked at YouTube's success and decided to buy YouTube putting it under their own brand and discontinuing their try at video sharing, Google Videos.

Google has updated the site many times over the years and has made major changes to the site, some for the better and some that really didn't help much but overall, they've kept us happy with the site. Throughout the years there have been many video sharing platforms that tried to take YouTube's throne. Sites like VidMe underestimate how crazy it is to host a video sharing website and other sites such as Vimeo or Dailymotion just aren't quite there yet as they aren't providing anything majorly new.

The problem with YouTube's competition is that they aren't a competition. YouTube is one of the biggest websites in the world and not just in the video-sharing market. While other sites do provide some new features, they aren't major enough to overthrow YouTube and usually, those video sharing platforms are as appealing and have stepbacks such as no monetization at all and upload restrictions. While these all make sense, it isn't worth switching to a brand new platform just because you're mad at YouTube. YouTube is the king and it will remain the king for many, many years.

I honestly think every single video sharing platform that tries to do what YouTube does will fail. VidMe was an example of one, what started off as a great idea slowly transitioned into YouTube.

Dailymotion has a restriction where you have to apply to become a creator, a "hassle" compared to what you have to do on YouTube.

VidMe failed because it couldn't keep up with itself.

Vimeo seems too much like YouTube and has a community that generally wouldn't enjoy gaming or things of the like. Vimeo is more business-oriented.

That's pretty much all I have to say, for now, I'll probably post something later as well because this seems pretty fun.

While YouTube has its faults, it is superior to other video sharing platforms.
