Why did Game of Thrones, Season 7, Episode 7, END the Season

We all are shocked, not only at the finally, but why did season 7 end last evening. Every other season had 10 episodes.

When will the new season begin again. After reading some articles, they say the production costs were excessive this season. The fame is getting to all the characters to the point that the cost per episode is getting out of hand.

Actually, I thought the pace of this season was rather satisfying. They hit all the major beats and didn't bog it down with too much detail. I'll be sad to see it go next year, it's one of the shows I actually make time to watch.,
