The Atrai River

is the westernmost tributary of the Brahmaputra. One of the sacred rivers described in the Mahabharata. Its ancient name is Atrei. The source of the river is 10 km northeast of the town of Siliguri in West Bengal, from where it flows west of the river Jamuna. Karatoya river is named after Atrai from Khansama upazila of Dinajpur district. The river Atrai divides in the north-west of Chirirbandar upazila and reunites in the south-west of this port.The western part is known as Gobura and the eastern part as Kankra. The river Atrai flows through the eastern part of Dinajpur city, crosses Bhusirbandar and Samjhiya ghats and enters West Dinajpur in West Bengal. It has re-entered Bangladesh through the international border of Naogaon district. The river then divides the central part of the Barind land into eastern and western parts and flows south through Manda upazila.Instead of flowing south, the river takes a south-easterly turn and first flows through the Chalon Beel and joins the Hurasagar River and then falls into the Jamuna River near Baghabari. Punarbhaba is one of the few tributaries of the Atrai. Others include Fakirni and Baral rivers on the right bank and Karatoya on the left bank. The tributaries of Atrai in the greater Rajshahi-Pabna region are: Tulsiganga, Nandakua, Baranai and Baral. The total length of the river is 360 km.
