The Unmentionables! - Encouraging, Interactive Discord Group - Thumbs Up Thursday by A Panama Mama
I started steemit last month and was quickly learning the ropes when I saw a few people talking about a group in discord. I went and clicked the link and it didn’t really look like something for me, so I moved on. Then @ethandsmith recommended I come check out a new group called The Unmentionables that had some encouraging people in it. I decided to give it a glance and see what it was all about.
When I first entered the group, I appreciated the fact that people were actually using the group. There were people actually chatting in the general chat channel. I have since been to a few other groups that are seemingly dead and people only use them for post promotion. This group was different in that one of the “rules” was you had to interact with members of the group in order to promote your post. Just what I was looking for – people who would actually read and comment on my posts!
I did all the steps necessary to join The Unmentionables, and I have enjoyed being a member for a few weeks now. I enjoy reading other members’ posts, and then commenting and upvoting them. I’ve even gotten to know a little bit about some of the other members this way. I have seen that a lot of them are really cool - like one of the members is a professional basketball player, one plays in a band, some other expats, and lots of nice chicas. They even have a daily curation (best of the members) post - these have a little more information about the group too.
I highly recommend this encouraging group to get your feet planted and keep you motivated in steemit. It has a great sense of community – better than any other group I have seen. I have convinced my friend here in Panama and my husband to join it. Now it’s your turn!
If you have checked out discord in the past and it looked too intimidating, I encourage you to try it again and look into this group. You will really be happy that you did. There is an application to fill out here (although there is a little back up – just be patient).
Hope to see you in the group!
Thumbs Up Thursday will be brought to you here every Thursday by A Panama Mama.
Check back each week for recommendations of products and services I love.
If you would like to share your thoughts, feel free to in the comments.
Thanks for visiting!
Well, discord looks great for chatting. I'm also new in this world. A bit older than you, but still new.
Yes @ethandsmith is a great guy. I love his work too here. He looks to have some initiative in his life and doing interesting things.
Maybe we'll see there sometimes ;-)
I have some time and read other posts too from there. And from time to time i have the power to make my own posts. Maybe soon will have more and more.
Wish you luck and fun here!
Cheers
Nice! Thanks for the reply. Look forward to seeing more from you!
I'm very glad I recommended you check out our group! You've made some fantastic contributions, and it's been really interesting learning about your life in Panama!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks man! Yeah, I'm glad you recommended it too! I am glad to have a supportive group to hang out with on steemit! :)

It really is a fantastic group!
I love the welcome they give to new members. Glad to be part of this wonderful group.
It is a great group! ;)
I applied, but I'm not sure what do do next or how to participate.
When did you apply? It has been taking a few days to get back to people. Do you already have a discord account?
If it's about The Unmentionables and it's well written upvoting is a no-brainer.
Super glad to have you in the Unmentionables, keep up the good work!
nice! your posts have convinced me that i need to check out Panama some time, it looks beautiful!!
And i probably wouldn't have seen there were it not for the unmentionables...
Yea! It is beautiful. Slow paced, Hispanic culture could drive a person kind of crazy, but it is beautiful. ;)
A slow-paced, Hispanic culture w/ its mañana-mentality sometimes sounds like heaven on earth. You dangle these tantalizing visions in front of me .... and there are days I feel I couldn't pack the car fast enough. Just put on my shoes, point the hood south and keep on driving. That's actually why I wound up in New Mexico ... the other places I've lived were just too frenetic.
So far, I've managed to quash the temptation, but the day is coming where finding another sleepy little town or village will be top priority once more. I actually have a list of places to consider -- still short enough to hold in my head. And when the homes and traffic start closing in again, I'll pick a place from my favorite options and move there. It's only a matter of time.
Nice! That sounds like an interesting way to live. :) We like it here but some days it just drives you crazy. We thought about driving here, but they said the border crossings are really bad and could take hours, plus all the insecurity near the borders in Mexico where you could be pulled over by the drug cartel and demanded to pay a ransom. Yikes, no way. I never really planned to live outside of Texas, but things change and I'm happy to be here now (although it doesn't really feel that far away honestly). Same time zone really helps!
I know what you mean. I won't go to Mexico any more, let alone through it -- for exactly the reasons you mentioned. The place made me nervous back when it was a whole lot safer. Now -- it's just insane to be a Norteamericano there .... traveling the open roads in a decent car (and you with little kids, too? OMG!!)
Eventually the international community -- the US and Mexico in particular -- have to come up with better answers to these problems than have been proposed or implemented so far. The colossally ineffective "War on Drugs" isn't it. Trump's highly publicized and highly ridiculous (in equal measure) border wall isn't it.
We need serious discussion and serious action on solutions that might actually work. But as bad as things are ... as desperate as people are becoming ... we ain't there yet. I've asked myself for years ... going on two decades now ... "how bad does it have to get?" Apparently the answer is "pretty damn bad," because a genuine end is not yet in sight.
I'm glad you've found a place that works for you. That kind of independent decision is always empowering -- and, for now, a workable choice. Maybe it always was. There's a lot to be said for cutting your own trail in search of a better way.
Yes, lots of truth here. We gringos are a target pretty much anywhere we stand out. This is definitely an issue here with extra security measures, but there is still a lot of vulnerability. Especially when it comes to getting work done. It's called Gringo Bingo - can you get the gringo to pay way more than they should? We've had 2 cases last week where we were major overcharged...not fun. Live and learn. Yeah, our plan is working out for now, and hopefully it will continue to work out. They say that 5-10 years ago, it was much easier to do various things...build houses, do border crossings, etc...but government restrictions have made life more difficult. We got permanent residency status, but we have friends who weren't able to and had to return to the States to try to figure something else out. Maybe when I write my why we moved to Panama post, it will go on your short list of potential future homes. ;)
Gringo Bingo, hmmm. You know, that's just sad and really short-sighted. They may have gotten away with some extra dinero, but look at how that made you feel. Unless this is for something you will never need them for again, you'll also never call them again. (If you're like me, you have a long, long memory for such things.)
And ... when something like this happens, the word gets around. I bet your friends are also warned not to call these people either -- and the ripples keep on running. The Karma on something like this is pretty awful.
So, while they may have pulled a fast one in the short-term, life has a way of circling around and evening the score. I've seen it happen too many times to call it an accident. (And what a crummy way to have to approach every transaction down there. )
That Golden Rule is not just decent scripture for a Sunday sermon. It's advice on living with integrity and grace. Sounds like somebody (or two or three) needs to learn that lesson sooner rather than later.
