Can you believe that social media has been a part of our lives for over a decade? Since MySpace went about and changed the world, we have gone from wanting to keep our lives private to wanting to broadcast every moment! This became even more prevalent when Facebook emerged. Today, people are sharing nearly every aspect of their life on social media. When you think about it, most people find that it’s easier to just make a post instead of having to rehash the same story over and over again. This is especially true when it comes to announcing a major life change like getting engaged, married, having a baby, or even having to break bad news. But sometimes, people use their social media as a platform to express their views, which can sometimes get people in trouble. Or, if you’re misbehaving in public, you can guarantee that someone will have their camera out recording the incident and will post it to social media.

For all those talk about "Privacy-this, Privacy-that", the same people are posting just about the smallest things. And unwittingly endangering their safety and family's at times with details that any prudent person would have kept private.
By the way, while social media is accepted by many to begin with MySpace and Facebook, I'd say it was already around well before that. Newsgroups/Usenet - the term "social media" wasn't used yet. But I'd say these groups qualify.
