The Good News: Hemp Being Used For Phytoremediation

in #thegoodnews6 years ago

A farmer in Italy is using hemp to clean his land from the toxins left by a nearby steel mill.

Ten years ago, the government discovered high levels of dioxin in Vincenzo Fornaro's sheep and slaughtered his entire herd - over 600 animals. He is forbidden to raise livestock or grow food, thanks to the high toxicity of the area. So he decided to do what was done at "...Chernobyl, Ukraine. In the mid-1990s, a company named Phytotech worked with researchers and a Ukraine-based seed bank to plant thousands of hemp plants in and around Chernobyl."

From the eco news media article (second link): "According to researchers from Colorado State University, hemp is extremely effective in removing the toxic element cadmium from soils.

This is convenient because cadmium contamination is everywhere. It is seen in fossil fuels, old-school pesticides and many other byproducts of human civilization.

Since hemp grows quickly, has deep roots, and doesn’t appear to be stunted by pollution, hemp is one of the best plants to use in phytoremediation.

Another amazing thing about using hemp for this process is that, once it has removed toxic chemicals from the soil, it can still be put to use. Hemp can be converted into oil for lubrication or other industrial purposes, it can be used as insulation, and it can even be used as paper or construction material. The most heavy metals appear to accumulate in the leaves of hemp, so it is best to use the stalks or seeds."

They even built an apartment building in the Italian town with the steel mill out of hemp!

It's so important society gets over its propaganda fear of anything cannabis and start using this plant for its many benefits - including cleaning up our messes! I wish they would plant this all over the most polluted zip code in America, which, btw, is where the cannabis warehouses that they grow it for smoking are ...you're safe to use some parts of industrial hemp used for phytoremediation for some purposes, but not for consumption. How polluted is your medical cannabis from the dispensary, I wonder. If I used it, I'd want to grow it myself, knowing this. 😬

Thanks for reading! Hemp hemp hooray!

Excellent information - so many solutions to so many problems are already out there and communications like this can help us make a better world!

That is so cool! I did not know that hemp could clean toxins from the ground like that. Doesn't surprise me though. 😁

Thank You!

Most people don't realize that cannabis, not just hemp, is capable of pulling toxins from their root zone. This is the number one reason I grow using hydroponics, the ability to completely control what cannabis has access to.

Not only does cannabis absorb toxins from the soil, they also bind these toxins to new tissue growth. These toxins do not flush or fade out near harvest time.

Superb cannabis starts with superior control of what cannabis has access to. ;) The quality is so rare, the majority of the public has yet to experience it. The majority of hydroponic growers are not aware of how cannabis needs to be treated. This ruins the quality of their end product.

Go BE Awesome! :D

Great use of hemp! Very cool.

Hemp is an amazing plant. It can be used to make paper, clothing, biofuel, lubricants, and even plastics. Also as you said building materials. Its seeds are very nutritious and cannabidiol (CBD) oil has healing properties. Thank you for posting another great use of this extremely versatile plant that I did not know of before reading this. The ability to remove toxins from the soil is an important use to be aware of.

Wow! Thanks for posting this, I wasn't aware of it. It's amazing!

The more I learn about hemp the more amazing it becomes. There is no end it it uses. Clearly the reason it banded. you can grow industrial hemp in the UK but you have to pay a fortune for the license. People need to wake up to this wonder crop! 💯🐒

It's crazy even that you need a license to grow it. What a world we live in where polluters get away with anything but individuals need licenses to grow plants, fish, and build shelter.

A corrupt one that's for sure. But the paradigm is changing and people are taking back our freedom. Soon people will grow it an utilise it in the way nature intended, I just hope its soon 💯🐒

Me too!

This is excellent! Maybe there's hope for us yet.

Very cool.

What a beauty!! I can't wait for the day that we see hemp growing everywhere!! FREE THE HEMP!!!!
