新宿から西新宿エリアに入ると、街の雰囲気が変わります。

As you enter the western area of Nishi-Shinjuku from Shinjuku, one of the downtown areas of Tokyo, you will find that the atmosphere of the city changes dramatically.

あたりには高層ビルがそびえ、道幅が広くなり、大きな街路樹の緑も楽しめます。前にも書いたように、このあたりは1970年代からの再開発でできた、人工的な街です。

Shinjuku is a very energetic downtown area. On the other hand, Nishi-Shinjuku is a green area with skyscrapers. As I wrote earlier in this diary, Nishi-Shinjuku is an artificial city created by redevelopment from the 1970s.

いわゆる西新宿らしいエリアの入り口、それは「LOVE」のあたりなのではないか。個人的にはそう思っています。

The entrance to the so-called Nishi-Shinjuku area, isn't it around "LOVE"? I personally think so.

この人目を引くパブリックアートは、「新宿アイランドタワー」の東側に設置されています。

This very eye-catching public art, designed with the four characters of the huge "LOVE", is located on the east side of "Shinjuku Island Tower".

米国の現代美術家、ロバート・インディアナ（Robert Indiana 1928～2018）の作品で、アルファベットの４つの文字はすべて正方形のなかに収まっていて、「O」の字が傾いているのが特徴。

This is the work of American contemporary artist Robert Indiana (1928-2018). If you look closely, all four letters of the alphabet are contained in a square, and the letter "O" is tilted.

彼は1960年代前半からこのモチーフで作品を発表し、彫刻としての「LOVE」は、1970年、インディアナポリス美術館に初めて登場しました。アメリカ以外には、ここ日本と、スペイン、カナダ、シンガポール、台湾に展示されています。

He has been presenting works with this motif since the early 1960s, and "LOVE" as a sculpture first appeared in the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1970. Besides the United States, it is said to be exhibited here in Japan, Spain, Canada, Singapore, and Taiwan.

新宿アイランドタワーの「LOVE」は観光名所でもあり、海外からの観光客が多かった2019年までは、写真撮影スポットになっていました。

"LOVE" at Shinjuku Island Tower is also a tourist attraction, and until 2019, when there were many tourists from overseas in Japan, it was a photography spot.

COVID-19による感染拡大の影響で、このあたりからも人が消えていました。今は再び記念撮影する人が増え、にぎやかさを取り戻しています。

People disappeared from the city due to the spread of infection by COVID-19, and people disappeared from the area around this lively sculpture. Now, more and more people are taking commemorative photos again, and they are regaining their liveliness.

わたしはときどき「LOVE」を撮影しています。この彫刻の短いメッセージは見る者の心を刺激するのか、「LOVE」のある風景は、その時々で表情を変えます。

From time to time, I shoot "LOVE" as if I remembered it. Does the short message sent by this sculpture stimulate the viewer's heart? The scenery with "LOVE" changes the atmosphere from time to time.

「LOVE」は、無機質になりがちなオフィス街を、華やかにします。

"LOVE" makes the office district, which tends to be inorganic, gorgeous.

「LOVE」は、忙しいビジネスパーソンに優しいまなざしを向けます。

"LOVE" gives a gentle look to busy business people.

「LOVE」は、帰路につく女性を見守ります。

"LOVE" watches over the woman on her way home.

目立つのにうるさすぎず、しかし気になって足を止め、つい写真を撮りたくなってしまう。それが、この「LOVE」というパブリックアートの強さなのでしょう。

It doesn't give such a noticeable but noisy impression, but it makes me want to stop and take a picture. That is probably the power of this public art.

エネルギッシュな街、新宿で高揚した気持ちを、この「LOVE」で少し和らげたあとは、よりリラックスして、緑の豊かな西新宿エリアの散歩を楽しめるかもしれません。

After relieving your uplifting feelings in the energetic city of Shinjuku with this "LOVE", you may be able to relax more and enjoy a walk in the lush green Nishi-Shinjuku area.
