Remember the old typewriter?


How many have you played with it or were you interested in typing words with it?

I used the word 'played' because many of you, like me, must have been young when it was in use and many more might have only heard of it or seen a picture on the internet.

Typewriters are not used today. Computers have replaced it totally that it is an object found only in antique shops probably.

Typists and stenographers were very much in demand. It was the norm to study typing after high school. Many young people boasted of white-collar jobs after they earned their typing and stenography diplomas and migrated to the cities. This was from 1950 to 1970 period.

With the onset of the computer and the widespread use of the Windows Operating System, things changed rapidly and the typewriter is now ancient.

    I grew up with one of those :P Well, not with the round keys, but still, computers were just reaching the general public. My first pc had a green screen!

        I was born in the 1950s, so typewriters were still very much a thing when I grew up. I was given one as a gift when I was a child. I played with it at first, yes, but then it became important for typing essays and "term papers" when I was in High School and college. I took a class in "typing" when I was in High School (most girls took the class, as well as boys who planned to go to college). All businesses had them when I started working after college. I clearly remember the days when the first "word processor" machines came along and we had the ability to edit documents before printing them for the first time ever, and they slowly replaced the typewriters. It was several more years before computers became the vogue for typing documents. 🙂
