100 DAYS OF STEEM - Tourist Guide for the Day

The town where I live in, La Ceiba, has a population of about 250,000. In reality in the city itself there is not much to do, we do have a nice mall, we have a few buildings that date from the beginning of the 20th century when Standard Fruit Co. (now a part of Dole) was starting to take control of this area. Apart from that we just have the old wharf which has been remodeled for tourists, it no longer is a place for boats.

But in a 20 km radius from town, we do have a lot to offer someone who is coming to visit. Among the attractions are the Garifuna villages, home to the descendants of African slaves whose vessel sunk on its way to the Caribbean islands and they stayed here and are now a good sized part of our population. Where there is a Garifuna village you can be sure there will be nice beaches, and a taste of their food, dances and culture. These guys use a lot of coconut oil with their food, also they make coconut bread, coconut candies, coconut shampoo, anything with coconut they have it.

Then, going south, we come upon the skirts of a mountain range which is the Pico Bonito National Park , if you follow the Cangrejal River you will come upon the best white water rafting in Honduras, some say in Central America, but that could just be boasting. In any case I don't do white water rafting, I can barely swim so I am not attracted to this at all.

From this area you can also start trekking the mountains which are relatively high, reaching nearly 2,500 mt at Pico Bonito, and remember this is a very high mountain it starts at sea level so when I say it is 2,500 mt high that is what you will have to climb. That also I don't do, I've been up mountains, there is nothing there.

Then there going west you reach Cuero y SaladoNational Park, this is a wild animal refuge, there is a big lagoon and there are 190 different species of birds and many different mammals, the most sought after by tourists for photgraphs is the manatee, an endangered species which grows to a very good size, I personally have never seen one. I actually am more of a city type person.

There are a lot of sea side hotels all along the coast, ranging from first class hotels to cheap hostels, there are also mountain hotels which also go from very good to hostels. The food is no problem you can probably get whatever you are looking for as long as it is not something exotic from another continent.

I will tell you La Ceiba was considered for many years as the prime place for tourism, it has a famous carnival which is held in May, people come from all over Central America, Cayman, and the US it is in fact a fun day, I stopped attending after I quit drinking, but it is good and every year they bring some international artists. This year of course it was not held because of the pandemic.

Overall La Ceiba is a fun place to visit, and actually with just one day you would not even start seeing everything there is on offer for tourists.
