back when it was money and they got 10k a day while sleeping for just being a top 50 (which is nice b/c witness votes dont expire, if you have 100k votes from inactive accounts by people who are gone, you stay voted - its like obama coming up next year with all the votes he had from last time to start with)
the steemit way - no nepotism included
on top of that you could BUY prefab preinstalled node machines from one of the top witnesses and they made it really sure that its really hard to understand how to set up your own

just like the api was very accessible and afaik has been untouched since the takeover
the python scripts i use mostly still work but throw ten ton errors
