Am getting confused on this one. If everyone is getting 22, maybe they did it like this:
6+4-1 =9
9+6-1 =14
14+9-1 =22
Or
4*2-2=6
6 *2-3=9
9 *2-4=14
14 *2-5=23
23 *2-6=40
I am confused here
I think all your answers are possible. There is not enough information for a definite single right answer.

I don't think there even can be enough information for a single right answer, except if one is asked to produce a function to compute the sequence and an upper limit is given to the number of characters allowed to express the function using a specified notation.

A better measure of "intelligence" or skill with numbers in this type of tests would be how many correct answers the test taker is capable of producing in the allotted time. The total number of correct numbers is infinite.

Yep, I tend to come to the conclusion that 22 is the correct answer. I wasn't the first it seems.
